            Love me some Greenwings,

Middle zone. We did not go on the opener. Been a long time since we missed it. So Sunday we went to the little pond in the timber bottoms and set up the invisablinds out in the mud flat along a long tapering shore. Threw out some decoys. Birds all over flying it really surprised us. Did not fore a shot. Greenwings in and out fast and only one wood duck pass by. The greenies did pitch in way wide. Had some bigger ducks give a look but most high and going places. We had a good time just watching. It is a good place but way down from the drought and not very appealing. I went back solo this morning and sat in the brush more on the old dam side. Made a quick sparse blind of sorts. More shooting in the distance today compared to yesterday and less birds but the Greenwings worked as they do a quick pass diving in from treetops then gone or one or two serious passes with some landing. Still wanting to land wide I shot my limit. Done early I really brushed up the hide good before I left. Think I will go again in the morning. Do some tweaking to the decoy placement and try to get birds in my face.  The birds were really fat as Greenwings generally are. A couple were packed with what looked like millet seeds and what I think were water fleas.

So, I am on the board with six birds. Don't expect a good season unless we get lots of rain to fill my bread-and-butter farm ponds.

Had a good couple of days in Iowa. The mallards are there BIG time. Stopped by Nodaway on the way home and drew in. It was tough, but ended up with five, including the prettiest wood duck I've ever shot. Onward!

Thank you! Yea, if I didn't already have one on the wall I would've sent him to the taxidermy man. I am getting the green-wing drake mounted though. My goal is a drake of every species in North America.

Good luck1 That's my kind of goal. I saw my first harlequin drake early last spring. Those are pretty cool birds. We saw eiders when we lived in Ireland. Some folks see them occasionally here in Maryland.

I'd love to get a King Eider. I know Jeff Coats shoots one or two every year up there. I saw a flock of old squaw at Clinton Lake in Kansas two springs ago. Two guys shot surf scoters in Iowa this year. Little off course.

The lards have arrived. Also, took my grandpa's 1973 Citori out and it got it's first duck ever. Pretty cool.

Went to 4rivers yesterday...was fun.  Lot of people for very few spots...but we made it thru.   Lot of big birds around and very few teal.

Both the boys went so it was a great time for me.   98FC1932-76E5-4A84-BE9F-DACB146E0221.jpeg

Called it quits at 2 due to basketball practice but...all in all a great day.  Rained hard on us on the way home so hopefully they’ll be able to pump some more...and open up a few more spots.

I haven’t seen the official but I bet is was 40 for 15 spots or so.
