Daryk Campbell Sr Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 I am currently building what I could not find for sale. Many may remember when I was looking to buy a Tenkara rod for micro fishing. Well the word Tenkara and the type of fishing it represents seems to have been lost in translation. Long story short, the Japanese have a style of micro fishing called Tenkara. They fish for Tanago (tah-nah-go) which is a micro fish. They use ultra short rods as short as 2 feet. The smallest I could find so far was the Tiny Ten rod, but its $80 and no reel. So with much web surfing and many many hours on YouTube ( Kawan Mancing @johnsfolly ) I found someone whonwas building and using the rods I wanted to build. Here is my current progress. This is an eyeglass case from Walmart. Bonus feature is the bottom is lined with foam. Ill be putting some homeade flies in here as well. The white circles are to hold line pre rigged with hooks. Gavin Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 Looks like fun, if you want to build a full size six strip bamboo I own most of the tooling, know where to get access to the rest, Havent made one from scratch in 15 years, but I split a culm of cane & started on some strips last year. nomolites, BilletHead and Daryk Campbell Sr 2 1
Daryk Campbell Sr Posted December 14, 2022 Author Posted December 14, 2022 I've seen that process, and it looks to be rewarding. I'm not as committed to fly fishing as I really want to be. If that makes any sense. The bamboo rods are a real woek of art and I believe it makes a great difference to the ones who are die hard casters. I would also need the workspace. That is currently tied up with my canoe which is on pause. This project has been done in the living room. I have stripped a small culm that I salvaged from some halloween decorations. Basically tiki torch posts but about half the length. It will be used for a 2 or 4 piece mini rod for mico fishing. I glued 2 strips back to back and whittled them down. I sed my drill to simulate a lathe for smoothing it down. tjm Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 I think what you wanted was not a Tenkara rod but a Tanago rod, the guy on Tenkara Bum wrote an article on the confusioon of names and how he contributed to it when he imported some other kind of rods. I believe he stocks the Tanago style rods now. But you will have more fun with that just knowing that you made it. Daryk Campbell Sr and Johnsfolly 2
Gavin Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 LOL, those are chop sticks! My scrap strips out of a 12’ culm are much better. Will see what is in the scrap pile, Daryk Campbell Sr 1
Daryk Campbell Sr Posted January 1, 2023 Author Posted January 1, 2023 I got to go fishing for the first time this year. The first time since the accident over 4 months ago. I built my rod, and used it today. BilletHead, nomolites, Johnsfolly and 3 others 6 Money is just ink and paper, worthless until it switches hands, and worthless again until the next transaction. As per the goals of Tanago fishing, now you just need to catch smaller fish with that rod😁. Daryk Campbell Sr 1
