I was at my son's house a couple months ago and as we walked out of his house we heard a big crash. Looked up the end of the block and saw smoke coming out of a house. Ran up there and found an 88 year old woman who had back out of her driveway and never took it out of reverse. She hit the gas an as it jump the curb in the neighbor yard she floored it. Driving through their garage door and out the side of the house. Had to get her to let off the gas  and I reached in the open window to turn the car off. She was not hurt but there was lots of damage to the house. She thought she had crashed through her own house and wanted me to knock on the door and get her son. I said if he was in this house he would have surly heard the crash and come out. She didn't know it was a neighbors house. No one was home and the owners didn't find out until they got home from work. The wreck had knocked out the electric and gas so they had to move out for a couple weeks. Her son said it was her third in the last year. I told him that he needs to take her keys and he said it would have to be someone braver than him. Had to take my father-in-laws keys a few years back after 4 wrecks in 5 months. The bad thing is he was just able to renew his drivers license this month. Told him it was only and state ID. But the DMV never questioned him or even gave him and eye test. That is wrong!

Sounds a lot like my FIL. He would take out the mailbox at least a few times every six months. Fortunately, he lived in the country. The state suspended his license and would not allow him to renew. He would argue with us that they didn't take away his license since it was still in his wallet 🙄.

Dad gave up without a fight, he knew his limitations.  I made it a point to make him drive when I was going somewhere with him to check him out.  Our last trip to town, his foot could not feel the brake pedal and he said it.  Nerves were damaged by blood pressure issue, he stopped taking the pills because he felt he did not need them.  That was his last time behind the wheel.

He could mow on the zero turn and he did that until 2 summers ago.  But I had to help him on it.  And I was always close watching him.

He has been racing wheel chairs now in the nursing home since May..
