BilletHead Posted March 14, 2023 Posted March 14, 2023 I don't know about you all, but I could not wait to watch ESPN2 on Saturday morning every week. If I was out doing something the VCR was set up to tape a string of shows to be viewed later. The favorite of that morning was Spanish Fly. Jose Wejebe put on a good show, and I miss it to this day. His boat has been rescued and restored. Catching the Ocean View: Memorializing the Spanish Fly, a fishing legend - New Pelican His last show, Johnsfolly, netboy, Terrierman and 4 others 7 "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!" netboy Posted March 14, 2023 Posted March 14, 2023 That was a great show. I also remember some of the other old fishing shows like Jerry McKinnis and Virgil Ward. I think Jim Thomas Outdoors Show was the first fishing show on TV. It was in black and white and on in the mid 50's. MickinMO 1

Also the Fishing hole with Jerry McK. Enjoyed the Doug Hammon's bass footage on the Bass Professor. MickinMO 1
FishnDave Posted March 14, 2023 Posted March 14, 2023 I liked that Virgil Ward apparently didn't bother editing out all the times he'd cast his lures up into trees. 😅
BilletHead Posted March 14, 2023 Author Posted March 14, 2023 Oh my gosh this brings up some memories. 😁 Met Virgil Ward below Truman dam fishing for crappie. I knew who I was looking at as I fished 20 yards down the bank. He would catch a fish and if legal keep it. Had a couple other guys with him. Pretty soon he threw out a snarl and I mean a good one. He fought it trying to get it out. Then I hear sonny, sonny come over here, turned my head and yep, he was calling for me. Went over and he said my eyes are not very good can you help me get this fixed. I did and he explained he was trying to get some crappie to fillet at a store event. Too funny Grandma always watched his shows and never missed any. She would always say she did not like him! HA. Second encounter with a guy was at Harrisonville Wal Mart. This guy was at a table and on each side was a display. One was fillet Knives and the other was Strong Heart canned dog food. Sure, enough there was Harold Ensley, and he was demonstrating his knife of choice filleting crappie. No one around he called me over and said watch this on how I fillet a fish and never touch the meat. He talked about his bird dog and how good the dog food was. Oh how I wish we had cell phones with cameras back then. Grandma watched him too but did not care for his hunting on some shows. ness Posted March 14, 2023 Posted March 14, 2023 I have fond memories of watching Harold Ensley The Sportsman's Friend with my dad and brother. He did a little of everything. All outdoor scenes shot on film without sound, and narrated in studio on live TV. And that song...quite possible my next ear worm Saw him at the KC sports show one year. He had his red ford station wagon there with him, which I thought was pretty cool. Here's a pic I scraped off the wide wide world of web Daryk Campbell Sr, BilletHead and dpitt 3 John

fishinwrench Posted March 14, 2023 Posted March 14, 2023 My grandpa was a station wagon guy, but my Dad always had trucks. I never understood why Papaw chose station wagons until I turned 16 and could drive it. There weren't that many 4x4 trucks back then, and those old station wagons were TANKS. As long as you didn't bottom it out or bury it to the frame those suckers would go anywhere. Snow, Mud, Sand, whatever. 👍 MickinMO 1
fshndoug Posted March 14, 2023 Posted March 14, 2023 I always liked the Orlando Wilson fishing show. Bill Dance only fished the same lake every show.
