I saw this video yesterday and my first thought was, why didn't he head to the bank and at least get under the trees?  Whenever I've been caught out on the lake in a storm I first try and get to an empty dock (that I've already scouted out if weather appears threatening) and if that's not doable then get to the bank and beach the boat.

I've had people suggest that's dumb because of trees attracting lightning but I'll take my chances in the trees over being out in open water any day.

Especially in a hailstorm.

I agree. One of those comes along just right and you will never make it back to the launch.

Man, I've been fortunate to never get caught out in hail like that.  Yikes!

Got caught in one like that once.    We put our PFD's over our heads and made it under a dock.   The sound of those hailstones on the roof of the dock was deafening.

As we sat under the dock a group of a dozen or so geese took flight off of a point of land, and we watched as they went down one-by-one.   When it was over we idled out.....and 2 of the 12-15 geese were floating deader than a hammer.

Like a lot of guys I used to have a couple of motorcycle helmets in the boat for running in cold and rain and they save our butts a couple of time when it started hailing.

Now I've got the Fish Hedz or whatever they're called that wouldn't do much good in hail but then I've become such a lazy posterior fair weather fisherman that the odds of me getting caught out in something are about zero these days.

And with all the empty docks on Table Rock there's always someplace to hide.

Now the lightning is a different deal though.
