Jan 4 Cape Fair… cold

Starting about now I really don’t think the cold helps much. The Shad are already in the 50’ to 70’ range and aren’t going to congregate much further.

The cold makes the shallow fish much more lethargic. I’d much rather see bright sunshine and a warming trend to move the fish higher in the water column.

Right now  and coming up are about the only time the  bright sun is your friend on the Highland Reservoirs.  Light penetration and warming temps will start to ease them into thinking transition.

I have an entire arsenal I’m throwing at em this year, so I’m chomping at the bit.

I do think things may be slightly different this year ... I fished last Thursday on Beaver and we STILL had water temps above 50 ... up to 52. That apparently causes shad to get careless and wander shallow because I graphed them in good numbers at depths less than 20 feet in the creeks.

This is all new to me coz I've not seen water temps this high in my 24 years in the Ozarks in January, nor have I seen this many shad in the creeks this time of year, but I'm thinking some of those will be killed when the water temp drops dramatically, kicking off a good jerk bait bite. If not, guess I'll just have to keep catching those toothy fish on my jerk baits. Not such an awful thing, come to think of it. :)

I had to replace all three batteries in my boat this past week. They just wouldn't charge or hold a charge anymore. I am all set to go this weekend and hoping this colder weather will have helped the jerkbait bite. 😁 Although, I am going to spend some time looking for those deep bass too. I have only been able to catch from a school I saw on my graph on one occasion and that was during the summer. I don't have FFS and doubt I ever get it. I will be upgrading my graphs this year though for larger screens and some side imaging transducers. Not having the side imaging is hurting my ability to find schools. I am still debating if I will do the MoYak Winter events. There is one on Taneycomo next weekend (13th). I have the drysuit and gear... Last winter, I was fishing every week in the bitter cold. There were a couple of times I questioned my sanity...

Did they cancel the tournament today?   Just curious considering the weather.  TIA

It's sunny with no wind, great fishing conditions.  😃

I bet there is a boat or two on the lake today.

I gotta admit my shack nastiness is so bad I have to keep reminding myself that it’s well below freezing.  I guess I’ll ghost shop at tackle warehouse today😂

I fell prey to an 870 tactical before Xmas.  Couldn’t check out without a few thousand rounds of 556 and 38 special along with 00 buck.

The BV pistol range is closed down for a while, so no ammo being expended by me.  Might have to go to an indoor range next week if the roads are decent.

There’s several around us and they are packed all the time.  I’ve never seen anything like it.
