Quick Q on hook size...

Since the next few days are not going to see me leave the house, I was thinking of a fly-tying binge.  I've yet to catch a white bass on a fly, and I would like to know what size is appropriate.  I see mention of #8 and #6 a lot, but then I've caught quite a few white bass on a #7 Shad Rap. That makes me think that a larger fly may work, and since I have a ton of  larger streamer hooks...

  Works for me Keith. #4 B10s My finished clousers are 2 to 3 inches long. My favorite white bass taker. Works year around. Time to start fly tying and think about the spring run although @curtisce and I found some really early in deeper water last year before the run up.

I second the #4 B10S. Ahrex makes some good ones too, and they're really thin if you're looking for that. Size 8 for the Ahrex predators.

@kjackson you asked a similar question a year or three ago and at that time someone suggested to you a number of flies in "hook sizes #6-#2  and 2"- 3.5" long".  I remembered  it because at the time I thought I might try some of them.

X4. I will second Ryan’s mention of the Ahrex Pred but I would go larger for temperates.  Those are the two hook types I keep on hand.

Thanks for that--like I can remember what I had for breakfast two days ago...but I appreciate the link.  And the original info. I'll have to check on what hooks I do have. I probably have the B10S, but with my luck, it will be in #12 or 1/0. However, there are other options. I do have a lot of Atlantic salmon hooks, which albeit not super-sharpened, are pretty darn shop right out of the box.  I also have the 34007, which Wrench once recommended. And a bunch of the new Mustad varieties.

I've not caught a white bass on a fly (because I haven't tried), so that will be my fishing goal this year.  I'll just have to put down the crank bait rod or the A-rig.
