fishinwrench Posted February 19 Posted February 19 Unless you tie all your flys in natural colors then your boxes preserve COLOR more than anything. It seems that nobody can permanently dye material anymore. 3-4 hours of sun exposure will bleach out anything dyed. Even Krystal Flash and tinsel loses it's shine & brilliance. If a fly lasts long enough for the hook to rust.....then you're way better than I am.....or you're not fishing enough.

I never have one long enough to rust. If fish don’t destroy it, I don’t stick it in a tree (both above and below water), then I’ll probably bite it off and toss it in the trash. I don’t like used flies.

They are probably being supplied "non-toxic, lead free, environmentally safe" dye from some leftist douchebag here in America. I hope his purple underwear stains his ball sack ! To remain politically correct I should check to see if you have purple balls before I answer. 😁 Yeah it's a bad thing. If a chartuese Clouser only remains chartuese for 20 minutes while using it, then it definitely is not as good as stuff dyed that color back before the dye was declared environmentally unfriendly.
tjm Posted February 20 Posted February 20 I don't buy much chartreuse yarn or hackle, nor purple panties either, is that fast fade stuff coming from major suppliers? Is Rit still available?

Is Rit still available? I honestly don't know, but I've been noticing it for the last 4-5 years. Yeah RIT (the brand) is still available, but I attempted to dye some rabbit hides and deer tails myself.....and that was a total disaster. Never again! RIT probably isn't the same as it used to be anyway. 🙄 The kids did some shirts and flags awhile back and they didn't hold their color well either. I remember doing tie-dye shirts back when I was a kid.....and those colors stayed vibrant forever. Something has definitely changed.
tjm Posted February 20 Posted February 20 Well Momma always washed her colors separate back in the '50's and 60s' for a reason, so store bought dyed items may not be any worse now than then. Some colors were worse to bleed back then and some fabrics held color better. Levi's would bleed every time you washed them for up 10 years, red flannel was almost as bad. I never did dye much but had always considered Rit to be fairly colorfast. You can also use their Color Stay Dye Fixative to help keep commercially dyed stuff from bleeding. I asked about the major suppliers because there is one of them that I have gotten really poor quality bird skins from, stuff with meat and fat still on it and undried.

You don't get more "major supplier" than that. I've had pieces of meat on skins, and borax powder covered pheasant feathers too.....but I can live with that. Chartreuse that bleeds out to pale yellow, and Olive that turns tan in less than an hour.....that just pisses me off ! I can't believe that everyone that uses their stuff isn't throwing a fit about it. Obviously there are scads of fly tyers that seldom actually FISH. 🙄
