Figured I would get some advice from the best online fishing community there is!   I don't post much since I don't live down at T-Rock but I do fish it as often as I possibly can.

So for as long as I can remember I've always had trouble spooling new mono onto spinning reels.  I hold the new line spool like a hockey puck and let it come off counter clock wise, the same way the reel is spooling it on but no matter what I do you end up with a decent amount of line twist.  I've spent HOURS researching what folks do.  I feel like everything that exists on the internet still results with a decent amount of line twist in your spool.   I pinch the line to give it some pressure.  I've tried soaking the spool in hot water (which some guys online swear by).   I always have to end up dragging my line behind the boat after I put it on to try to remove as much twist as possible.

I'm curious what you folks do.

Headed down to the Kings this week to chase some crappie.  My dad & I have done this trip for 33 years.  Earliest spring I can remember!   Normally we are 3rd or 4th week of April but due to schedules/real life it ended up being in March this year.

Thanks for the replies gents!

I use both a line box and a rolling wall system. Never a twist problem. Couple of tips from a retired guide.

First don’t over fill the spool

2 use appropriate line size for the reel. Most 1000/1500 series reels should not be spooled with a line wt.over 6 pound test  Even if it gives you a higher line capacity for the reel don’t go there

2000/2500 series you can use up to 10# but 8 is preferable.

NO. Carbon line. Forget about it. Use Maxima-Stren or XPS from BP.  MAXIMA OR XPS preferably.

NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER close a spinning reel by turning the handle of the reel to close or engage the bail. Your new line will be a mess within an hour. Always close the bail by hand.
I don’t care if you’re using a Stella or a piece of BP junk. Twisting the handle to close the bail will result in line twist.

Now if you’re using braid with a carbon leader that’s fine as the braid has little to no memory and spools well. Again read the label on the braid. If it says the diameter is equivalent to say 6 pound test and the braid is 15 pound test, spool appropriate

There are total exceptions to everything and experienced guys that have changed these rules can get away with it to some extent.

If your a guide with multiple inexperienced fishermen you cannot make mistakes. Equipment and line snaffues cost clients time and the guide money.

The principles I’ve outlined above prevent these gaffes.

Good Luck

God advice above.  I am a braid guy, but I also do a couole extra things. Since I have room to do it, I tend to strip of 50 yards or so of the line and let it flap in the wind as in wind it back on, getting any twist out of it.  I also use KVD Line and Lure conditioner on my line on a regular basis.

I do this or string it out in my yard a couple times to get the twist out.  I do it right off the bat.  I always hand close it.  No problems.  I use flouro too.  😁

I have a tried and true method, it is call a Brennan. He is a young man that has fished with me since he was 12 and is now 25. I just hand him line and a reel and magically the line ends up on the reel and I have not ever had any issues. I am 50 now and this system has worked really well until he moved to Arkansas for work. Luckily his mom still lives close to me so he comes to visit I save them up and he gladly helps. This is probably no help unless yall are able to locate you a Brennan but it is a good deal if you can, I recommend it highly,  make a lifelong fishing buddy and solve the spinning reel problem.

I think I am a few peoples "Brennan".  One friend I fish with, about every year our first trip I go to pick him up, and he brings his rods out then off to do whatever elsenhe has to do.  I can't stand the condition of the old mo o on his reels so I always bring a spool of cheap 6 lb test line and re spool.it while I am waiting.  Have found in the end it saves time.

These are a lot of good suggestions. I still like to let line out behind the boat (no lure) especially after throw some crappie baits all day.
