I do better on Skipjack when the water is warmer and they seem to get bigger as the year goes along.

I have not caught any from that water way.

Last year I was catching a half dozen almost every trip at one spot but this year in half dozen trips haven't caught one. They are in there but I don't know where. Maybe with the river coming up will get some moving.

An MDC Fisheries Biologiest mentioned a spot on the Mississippi River just north of St Louis, below one of the lock and dams (Alton, perhaps?) where folks regularly fish for skipjack to use for catfish bait.  Dunno about the Meramec, tho.

Very cool fish! A decent-sized one will fight very well.  I had one last summer, when fishing with @Ham, that had my 8wt fly rod bent over pretty good and I couldn't get it to come up for a bit.  I was starting to think a bigger fish had ahold of it, but when I finally landed it, there wasn't any evidence of haven't been mouthed by a catfish or striped bass.

It was the top fish in the pic below... nice one, but not even THAT BIG of one!  Strong fella!

MO State record, 3 lbs.

EFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) congratulates Anthony Rozniak of St. Peters for tying the current state records for skipjack herring. Rozniak was fishing with his brother on the Missouri River Dec. 6 when he reeled in the 3-pound fish. The catch ties two previous pole-and-line records – one recorded in 2019 from the Osage River and the third in 2017 from the Osage River.
