Saw this creepy critter out on the fence the other day. Anybody have an idea what this thing is?

Botfly. The larva are those nasty warbles that get into rabbits and other mammals.

Prepare to get grossed out. Those warbles are nasty and have seen them crawling out of rabbits and squirrels.

Well, rabbits and squirrels are the enemy of this is suburban gardener so maybe I should root for the botfly?

Maybe...but what if it lays its eggs in YOU?  Well, you could at least be like RFK Jr. and run for president with a worm in your brain.

Ahh, geez. I lost track of that thing and now I’m gonna wonder where he is. 😀

Could be very well while they are around. Lots of easy pickings in the city! We are having problems right now. Pat is transplanting wildflowers. Bunnies all over eating her transplants.  Happens every year until the local owls figure out, they are here. Soon we will be finding bunny fur where they were snatched up. Nature at work.

I knew a guy in grad school that had a botfly on his arm during a 2 month trip that he did in Costa Rica. He wanted to let it go to term and emerge so that he could be the ultimate "host". He said that it felt pretty strange moving around and the butt end sticking out kind of freaked him out. He ended up having one of his roommates that was experienced in pulling caddisfly larve from their cases without damaging them to remove the larva intact.

Hey Marty - I didn't read the whole article, but did they mention if bot flies expanding their range?
