fishinwrench Posted September 2 Posted September 2 I've tasted bear that was killed over a bushel basket of bacon grease and 2 day old pancake batter. I cleaned my plate, but didn't ask for seconds. If given a choice I'd choose the bacon and pancakes.
nomolites Posted September 2 Posted September 2 My FIL lives up in the Poconos and bear hunts; according to him there are “pig” bears and “dog” bears and the latter are not much good eating while the former are delicious. Apparently “pig” bears are more vegetarian, and according to him, can be identified by a shorter and blunter snout. I wouldn’t know, but I been told…. BilletHead Posted September 2 Posted September 2 Shot a bear in Ontario in the mid 80s with my recurve. Was a fun hunt. Like Glen said above it had been eating bacon grease and pastry items. We did like the meat but as stated by John above had to cook it well done to get rid of the possible trichinosis. I took the bear to be processed at a place in Nester Falls. The guy was mad because I had shot through the gall bladder. He had a side hustle selling the gall to a market where it was sent to the Orient for who knows what. I will try to find a picture to share and add more to the story later. BilletHead Posted September 2 Posted September 2 40 years ago. I was a young 26 year old. Spring season for Bear. My friend Kevin (21) went with. We have a small patch of timber next to our house that goes into a field. We practiced there. Tied small round bales of hay between trees about bear height. Made a tree stand and shot the heck out of those bales at various yardages. To this day we still call this area the bear woods. String trackers were the deal for awhile. I know some of you might remember them. Everyone said to use it on bear. Told their coats were thick coming out of hibernation and would absorb blood making tracking hard. Hunting evenings over bait. From 4 until dark. Its like nine to nine thirty to dark. Must have your bow unstrung or cased at sundown. This is creepy knowing Bear are out prowling. I got my bear on the first sit. We put up our own tree stands. The bear came in slow and very cautious. Then quartered away slightly. I drew and released. Bingo I hit the spot and let me tell you that bear covered some ground. String flying out of the container on my bow. It finally stopped and I heard what is called the death moan. Processer wanted the bear whole. It was that gall bladder he wanted thus making sure it wasn't disguarded. I got to start fishing lake of the woods from the bank. After Kevin got his bear we took a daily fly in to a remote lake. Flew into the lake in a beaver and picked up flying back in an otter. When we crossed the border going back we were asked what our business was in Canada. Told them and they said to park and bring in our export tag for the bears. I will have to say we both looked pretty rough, Kevin more than I. 🤣 So things got weird then. After looking at our export tag they wanted our wallets. Went through each pulling everything out. Gave each of us the stuff in a pile. Where were we born, country of origin. Many questions. Finally let us go. Felt creepy just trying to get back into America. These were our people making us feel this way. fishinwrench, nomolites, bfishn and 3 others 6 "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!" BilletHead Posted September 2 Posted September 2 The bear is still around, Had a full mount. The ticks and mosquitoes were really bad on that hunt. To this day if you part the bear hair there are petrified tick carcasses that went through the tanning process. When we hunted used 100 percent deet to fight the skeeters. Tried to use a headnet but they found their way in and you had them buzzing around inside the net. So we slathered out faces too. Those mosquitoes came in hard. You could feel them hit your skin. They would try to get you but the deet would run them off. They would be a cloud of them around your face.
