Dutch
A skinny fox stopped by and got a drink. I opened the window and it went around towards the street. In a few minutes it was back. It finished its drink then left out the back. Johnsfolly, ness and dpitt
ness
They are cool but kinda act weird at times. We've had them around the neighborhood, even in our back yard, but not recently. I have a friend that's got a second story deck and one climbs the steps and sits on the deck furniture from time to time. Johnsfolly
I was deer hunting one time and watched one climb at least ten feet up a hickory tree to check out some squirrels. Another time while turkey hunting I saw one with a large rabbit in its mouth and I presumed taking it back to it's kits. We have quite a few red fox out this way but I like the grays a lot better. BilletHead
Gray Fox! I'm with John, I like them. Trapped a few back in the day and yes seen one climb a tree. Grays like thick brush and timber where the Red's favor more open areas. Gray foxes are more catlike and would try to get you when trapped. Did not stop me I would wade right in and catch them. Somewhere I have a picture my dad took of me holding one when he went with me one day. Turned one loose while in Texas hunting Jalevina. It was in a foot hold. I was with a group of friends on that hunt. I felt pretty sorry for it. Texas is like another country and trapping is different. You don't have to run traps as often as here. That and for nuisance animals they use cyanide cannons. We were in way south Texas and seen signage saying they were in use in the area. Written in English and Spanish. For those of you who don't know here it is, M44 (cyanide device) - Wikipedia Ok back to the release of the gray fox. We were driving along when I first seen the Christmas ornaments and flashy garland hanging from some brush. Then the fox nearby caught in the trap. Being catlike it likes flashy moving stuff. I asked the guys to stop, and I grabbed some leather gloves. They ask what I was going to do. I said let it go, and they all freaked like I was going to get eaten alive. I got right in there and caught the fox, holding it I said one of you come over here and get the trap springs compressed and off. This even took some convincing. Finally, one did and off went the fox. This was 15 to 20 years ago One of the guys videoed it. John Sturdavant where are you know? From Iowa. He sent us all a copy and whis I knew where it was now. Great memory thanks @Dutch for this post and trip down memory lane. ness
I've never encountered a gray fox. The suburban ones we had were red and generally didn't give a hoot about people being around. One morning our dog was barking out the upstairs window so I went to take a look. There was a red fox in the back yard right next to our little 4-foot fence. He jumped over the fence from a standing stop, which really impressed me. Cool animals! Johnsfolly 1 John

Red fox and grays for that matter are loosing territory because of coyotes. They will kill them if able. Could be why people see so many in urban areas. snagged in outlet 3
I think this one has a den in my backyard. We have a little tree lot that drops off into a creek back there. I don’t want to go looking and scare him off. He triggers my cameras all around the house all night. He patrols it pretty good. Terrierman
Greys are native. The red fox are all English import descendants. Once you hear and know the Grey Fox spring mating bark you will listen for it in February and March from now on.

Quillback
Haven't seen a fox for a few years now. There was a period of time when they seemed to be all over Bella Vista. Always reds.
