Hey @fishinwrench    The dock at this place was home to about 7 or 8 guides plus the eco tour people.   No Mercury motors in the whole place.  Yamaha, Suzuki and hondas.  I asked a couple guides about Mercury and they all said NO Way!   I thought you might be interested.  

As long as you can trade for new ones every couple years they're all fine..... including the Mercs.

               When Richard and I were down there fishing in Texas.  Along the intercoastal waterway and San Bernard river every house along that area had outboards in their yards lined up. like junk on fences. I assume each were two years old now.

Yeah, it's a sad fact that outboard motors just don't last very long in saltwater.   And that's why they don't design their fuel & electrical systems any better.    90% of their sales are coastal...and always have been. 

Johnson/Evinrude was the only company that designed freshwater specific outboards that would stand the test of time.
