I’m nit sure why I don’t have a dedicated e reader yet. I guess I should just grab a mid range Kindle and go about finding more books to read, but before I get in a hurry after delaying for years, I thought I would ask for advice and recommendations for an e reader.
what has worked for you? What would you do differently? What should I avoid or at least not spend extra to get an unnecessary feature?

Thanks in advance!

My wife and daughters all have Kindles and love them.

I use the Kindle app on my iPad.

I like reading the books on the Kindle more than the iPad, seems easier on the eyes. But I like the flexibility of being able to jump on line and look things up or watch a video or whatever.

Either way the Kindle system is great. I think the wife and I pay $15 a month for the service so most things we read are free.

Just finished rereading The Odyssey on the iPad last night.

I have the kindle app on my note8 phone, prior I had it on a tablet,  along with some other reader apps. The phone is easier to hold while reading for hours and it is easier to carry in a pocket when going to and fro. If I fall asleep reading, the phone doesn't smack my nose as hard as the tablet did. Tablet sized devices are more like hardback books and phone sized devices are more like paperbacks.

I’ve had both; have an iPad Pro which is the best by far.  It is a very capable platform all around and I read A LOT, so worth the investment for me(have the 1TB drive).  Have had it 6 years so far.

I've never had or wanted a Kindle. Nothing against them, I just don't want the extra, limited-use device knocking around here. The missus has an iPad Air, and with the detachable keyboard and wireless mouse it covers ground from just an e-reader to almost a laptop. That's a pretty sweet setup - very thin and lightweight. I've got an older, heavier iPad that mainly sits in a stand on the kitchen counter that we read recipes from. Both have the Kindle app.

The wife and I gave up Kindles. We use I-pads with the Kindle app. Text size and background very adjustable. Plus the I-pad does more than be a reader.

I decided on a Kobo reader but do not use it as much as hard books.  It has a great background light and feel to it.  I like that it is not linked to Amazons data collection software.  It protects privacy a lot more.  I would recommended it.
