Painting jerkbaits for big trout

Finally got to fish the rainbow pattern this morning on the Upper Lake with the water off. First fish was a 20 inch brown.  We caught a few bows, another 17 inch brown and a couple walleye, along with a good sized channel cat and a few of them stinking brown bass on it.  Could not be more pleased with the results!

Used to eat Columbia river smelt, take the head off, gut them, fry them.  Bones would soften after cooking so you could chomp them down.  Pretty tasty.  You could get them in restaurants in the spring also, local specialty kind of thing.  About 20 years ago the population crashed, run dwindled to the point smelt fishing was pretty much shutdown.

Found that color on the rack. I thought it looked pretty close and just added some dots with a sharpie.  I don't think it looks awful. Gonna throw it with a slow retrieve and also thinking about using it on a drift rig when the water is on.  Will be fun to mess around with atleast.  I threw some 6 and 7 inch swimbaits and glide baits the last couple trips with no results but I didn't stick with them long enough either though. This smaller size might get some action though.
