Dad and I were bored so we ran down to the Springs for the last part of the day. Water was up probably a foot from opening day and flowing pretty good. Fishing wasn't the greatest. Dad caught four using bait and orange worms. I caught six (two on orange worm, two on trout magnet, two on white thread jig) and missed a bunch. Fish were biting very light and if I didn't see the bite and anticipate the hook set, I'd miss them every time. We fished between the first slow hole and the bathroom hole. Talked to a guy as we were leaving who said he caught almost 30 down below the bridge at the mud line.

I realize you all are having some fun but it does sadden me that we have polluted our planet more in the past 100-150 years than the entire previous history of mankind. The  environmental legacy we are leaving our grandchildren is sickening. What's more - I am afraid we are past the point of no return when you look at the amount of industrial pollution coming out of China and India, let alone what the US is continuing to contribute. We can debate whether climate change is man made or a natural cycle until we are blue in the faces. There should be no debating that we have to stop polluting our planet. It makes me sad because our descendants are going to rightfully blame the generations that followed the industrial revolution (our generation, our parents, grandparents, and great grandparents) for destroying what God gave us to take care of for all of mankind. Laugh and poke fun, we are going to be the not so funny of a joke in the future.

Global warming is still here.  Folks who live in the arctic circle are finding it's been about 30 degrees above normal all winter.  The coldest air in the northern hemisphere is right over the upper midwest currently.

Well, I made it down there by 8, found out about 3,000 fish had been stocked, and by 8:30 I got to fishing, with my usual pumped up mindset of "this will be the day" (when I catch fish after fish, get to 15-20 fish, with plenty of other bites too). As usual though, Meramec Springs pulled me back down to earth, and anchored me there. Because of the crowds and my preferred methods of fishing, I pretty much went straight for the lower half of the park, from the pool by the bathrooms on down, thinking it might be at least a little less crowded, and more conducive to my frequent casting. I had a couple bites by 12-1pm, but after watching countless people come, catch fish nearby and go, while nothing was happening for me, I started thinking that I may end up holding the very unique distinction of having been there almost all day, without catching a darn thing, on opening day no less. I decided at the very least I was going to keep trying different things in hopes of getting something, but by 5pm I still didn't even have 5 seconds worth of a fish on. Somehow in that last hour, I managed to catch 2 fish, throwing some crank/jerkbaits like I had been doing without luck at various times earlier in the day, and managed to salvage a little bit of pride, but man, today sucked for me. How was it for the rest of you guys that went?

I mostly fish them straight on 2# line and just bounce the rod tip while reeling. Try to keep the lure just slightly above the fishes level. I have done decent fishing them beneath a float in the faster water below the dump offs though.

Dad and I got down at 6am and found our usual spot to be full so we started across from where the water trickles out of the concrete wall between the river bend and the bathroom hole. I started off with a 1/16oz orange head sculpin/olive and caught 4. Dad caught 6 and kept his fourth in the first 30 minutes.
A friend stopped by and I quit fishing to shoot the bull for a little while. Afterwards, I moved down toward the bathroom and setup under the big trees and caught 9. It was about 9am so i headed up river and stopped above the bend riffle and caught two more and kept my fourth fish.
Caught most on trout magnets in white and black/green, orange head sculpin/orange jig and one on a white mega worm.
I went back today around 10pm for a few hours after a lack laster start at Montauk and caught 20+. Orange power worm and trout magnets were good and also caught a few on green/white rubber leg jig.

Figured I see if anyone else is planning on heading down there on Friday. I took the day off, to try giving it another go this year, and see if I can catch more than last year. Last year I really didn’t catch that many, so weather permitting, I’m hoping this year will be better.

Do the deer come from your property and stay on your property their entire lives?  Nope, they are the State's Deer just like the fish in streams are the State's Fish.  And they have to keep track of them.

During the winter I always look to coldwater fishing to start the year off right. In Missouri that usually meant a run down to the Current, Eleven Point, Little Piney rivers or even hit the C&R at Bennett's or Montauk. Even the urban trout program would be an outlet to be catching something and after Feb 1 would mean a few fresh fish dinners. Living in Columbia that would mean any where from 100 to 180 miles one way just to get to fish. Even with the drive I would most likely get into a bunch of active fish, mostly trout, but also sculpin, shadow bass, pickerel, rock bass, and others that live in those cooler waters all year round. Here in Maryland I have the same thought process. Look for cold water action, either ice fishing or trout stream or river fishing. I don't know if this is a typical year, but it has been warm (40's) throughout the winter thus far. So there are no safe ice fishing opportunities yet. Through Jan so far there has been at least one heavy rain event every week of the month. Mostly they have occurred on Friday or Saturday, which blows out the trout streams. So I have been watching You Tube videos from the Gunpowder river, a tailwater river that I fished last year on one of my early trips out to MD before we moved here (it rained then as well). I hadn't fished by the dam, instead fished at a lower access and caught a couple of stream bred brown trout on that trip.
I also dug into the fishing regulations and found that in MD artificial baits do include soft plastic baits that are unsecented. the guys in the You Tube videos were using small crappie jigs and catching browns. The Gunpowder is a C&R river in it's upper stretches up to the dam. So this week the rain came on Thurs and pushed the gage height on the Gunpowder up by 4 feet, but it was dropping just as fast. Yesterday I packed my gear and went up there to fish. As i pulled in at 7:30 (its 100 miles from my house), the sun was coming up and there was fog lifting off of the river below the dam. There was one other car at the top of the dam. I got my gear together and rigged a tandem bait rig with a pearl bobby garland shad on a 1/32 oz jig head and a green pumpkin slider with a chartreuse paddle tail also on a 1/32 oz jig head and headed down the 220 steps to the observation level and then down the steep bank to the river below the dam.

Water was still running about a12 to 18 inches higher than normal. The area that you can fish this pool is not very big and two guys were already there. So I started fishing closer to the tail end of the pool. I could see a few rock piles and structure out ahead of me and made several casts with the crappie tandem rig. No bites, but I found quite a bit of unseen structure that I got hung into. I ended up breaking off the tandem rig when I got into a fallen tree top. I switched to a 1/8 oz silver Johnson slimfisher spoon. With the water flow I put a split shot about 12 inches above the spoon. That still didn't get me deep enough. I put on another about 4 inches closer to the bait and cast out into an eddy near the other bank. It didn't take long and I had my first fish of the day and year on the line, a feisty brown trout.

Not very big by Missouri standards, but an average sized brown for this river. I put on another split shot and cast into that same eddy and caught another brown. The guys next to me had not caught a fish all morning on the plastic worms and crappie jigs, They got bites, but no fish. After my second brown the one guy put on a spoon as well. As I was landing my third brown trout out of that eddy (again after I put on another split shot) I saw them heading back up the hill to the cars. I moved into their spot closer to the deeper water by the dam. I switched reels to my 6# nanofil reel and a small floating jerkbait. Nothing. I made the switch to one of Duane's (@duckydoty) rainbow trout jerkbaits (the bottom one from the photo). I made several casts and then got hung in old fishing line.

The line cut me off and I was heartbroken. I did switch back to the 4# Pline reel and put back on the spoon. I caught three more browns, including this one which was the last fish of the day.

I had a bittersweet trip. Happy to have finally caught some fish, but bummed about losing one of Duane's baits. Then the precarious hike climb back to the observation level and the 220 steps to the car. I will definitely be back to this river more often in the upcoming weeks.

started off slow. Got there around 10:45 and caught nothing for the first couple hours. got some recomendations on flies and thats when it all changed. Started throwing a pheasant tail under a pink san juan worm and caught my PB on the worm! ended up catching 6 decent rainbows on both the worm and the pheasant tail before the siren went off. Super fun!

I finally made it down there yesterday. Almost didn't happen again as I was taking too long getting ready and basically left the house at 1:30 pm. By the time I got down there, I was going to have less than an hour left if I were to fish Meramec Springs, so instead I just tried my luck out at the Highway 8 Access to the Red Ribbon section. I can't tell you much in regards to what would've worked best, as I just kind of stuck with one of the really small shad colored crankbaits I already had on, seeing how I only had a few hours, and most of that was spent trying to wade my way between former "hotspots" without falling in, but I did catch a nice colored up, fat 15" Rainbow. I think I actually caught the same one twice, once going downstream and then again on my way back upstream around the same spot. Both times it gave me a good fight, 2nd time even with a few jumps thrown into the mix. I had another Rainbow on, that got off close to net, and then had another 2 or so bites where I didn't get to see what it was. It wasn't a few hours packed with action, but I was pleasantly surprised to have even gotten that much of it, much less, with a nice strong fish on top of that. On the down side, I found out my aquaseal patch job of my waders didn't really work out, so in some sense I'm glad I didn't stay there much longer or it would've been a rough cold day. One more cool thing to mention, I spooked some turkeys and had 10 or so of them just fly over me to the other side of the river, after they took off.

Well a pickup is a passenger car in Missouri. They just mean no commercial vehicles. Not sure why they don't just say that on the sign.
If we take the sign at it's truest meaning of the words then this is all that would be allowed.
