It has been our experience that they tend to swim counterclockwise in the pond near us. When we have ice fished you could see the fish move around the lake as people would catch them going down along the bank. Then 15 to 25 minutes later another round would come through.

Those are awesome river bass! Congrats on your October beauties!

Happy Halloween OAF - Had to put on my Game Face to get out for a last fall turkey Hunt. No Luck on turkey this evening. Now its taking care of the trick or treaters in the neighborhood. Good thing we got out pumpkins !

Awesome deer. Tell him that his grandson did a great job! I got Livie close but she didn't get a shot on a doe 55 to 60 yards. She is still a bit upset about the situation. Only got out on Sat. We'll see if she will want to get out again. I believe that her tag is good for the general gun season and for the late youth season after Thanksgiving.

We mixed a couple of different recipes to make wild turkey tetrazzini (food network and MDC recipes). So I can't give details on what was actually all included in this dish. Will say we used the turkey breast from my hen and a mixture of wild mushrooms (Asian beech and maitake mushrooms purchased from the store - haven't been too successful in fall shrooms this year ).

If you are just interested in Crane there might be closer places. If you want to fish a couple more streams, I have stayed at the Super 8 in Monett several times. You'll be within a half hour of Crane, 20 plus minutes from Roaring river, and 15 minutes from Capp's creek. Was refurbished a couple of years ago and is still clean. If you stay there I would recommend the Bayou for cajun food just across the road from the hotel.

As long as it is chilled and still not warm when you eat it. I am definitely up to trying venison tartare. Only issue would be whether there was an issue with the shot that could taint the tenderloins. Will just have to find out this year. The local asian market carries quail eggs to top the tartare☺. Will just have to find a halfway spot to meet you and the Mrs once we do try it.

Maybe the tenderloins once the deer has been gutted, but not the liver ! I have had the courage to eat and actually enjoyed some pate. I think about keeping the liver almost every time I clean a deer, then think about a bad liver incident at my grandmother's house as a kid. That was a mess .

I haven't tried heart, but have thought about it several times (a couple of nudges from watching Meateater). If I (we) am (are) successful and have a deer heart or two, will likely try it this season . Maybe even with peas!

Last night was intended to be leftover night. We had leftover wild rice from last night’s dinner. I dug around the fridge and found some deli ham, green onions, and some mushrooms. Decided on a fried rice bowl. I chopped up the ham, onion, and mushrooms and cooked on med-high to high heat with a little olive oil. Moved that mixture over in the skillet and did a quick scramble of two Folly farm fresh eggs with a bit of teriyaki sauce them mixed all the ingredient together. I added the rice and then seasoned with some garlic powder, sesame oil, little more teriyaki, and Asian five spice mix. Cooked until the rice was warmed through.

Mitch it may be an iPhone security setting issue. I have a Samsung android 4G not so dumb phone and am able to stay logged on for my phone and my PC.

So tonight we tried a new squirrel dish, Rosemary Parmesan Squirrel (recipe from MDC website). So we followed the recipe for the most part. Instead of water with chicken bouillon, we used the Folly farm chicken stock. I did cook the squirrel for about 25 minutes instead of the 15 min suggested by the recipe. Also we didn't have any onion soup mix for the sauce. I mixed onion powder, dried onion pieces, our prepared jerk seasoning, and a couple of dashes of worchestershire sauce. The wild rice mix that we used was Lundberg Wild blend rice mix that we picked up at our local HyVee. This was a nice mix of different grains and had a nice toothsome bite. We also fried some of the Japanese pie pumpkin to serve with the squirrel and rice. I will say that since there is not much of a braise on the squirrel, this is a dish that is best with young squirrels. A couple of pieces were very tasty, but tough.

As previously stated on record that you Suck ! That comes from your Mrs and from the Folly family! Don't even get me started on this statement Duane! It's just the jealousy talking. Congrats to both of you!

I have seen lots of game recipes that call for juniper berries, but I have always left out them out. I tended to just look for recipes that didn't need them. They tend to be hard to find. I haven't looked for them in years. If I can't find them around here, I may have to check out Mama Jeans natural market .

I didn't get a chance at getting down to fish your way last weekend. Planning on getting down there in the next couple of weeks. May be able to catch one or two near you when I am down that way.

Saturday I had a couple hours before sundown to get out and fish Whetstone creek CA. I have been looking for a spot to catch orangespotted sunfish and this creek has a good population. It also is one a few creeks in central Missouri that has the blacknose shiner. I fished this creek back in Sept and did not catch either of these two targeted species. I'm sure that I had seen several schools of the blacknose shiners. They were a spooky bunch of minnows. So this trip I put my spinning reel on my 9' fly rod. That set-up has worked for me in the past on spooky fish. The first pool was very clear water and I felt good about my prospects as I headed to a deeper pool that had the largest school of minnows on my last trip. The pool was an example of some of the issue with fall fishing, leaves. The deeper section of the pool was completely covered in leaves. No way to sight fish this pool. I went further down stream and got into cleaner water on the head of the next big pool. Also had active fish. I had lots of hits by little fish and only landed this carmine shiner. I continued further downstream. Still getting hits by the smaller minnows, but no hook-ups. The larger fish shied away from my baits. I was running our of daylight and was not as patient as I should be to catch some of these spooky fish. In another long pool I caught this minnow near some brush. I got confirmation that this is likely to be a blacknose shiner, but the glare from the LED light on the camera was obscuring the lateral line coloration. I'll have to get back as try to get a better picture. (didn't have my photo bag). I just wish that I could have got one of the larger minnows to bite. Just before it got too dark, I switched and targeted sunfish. I was only able to catch a single creek chub before it got too dark to see my float without my headlamp. As I headed back upstream I was constantly looking for possible fish, particularly the diminutive catfish, madtoms! I have been obsessed with catching a madtom since I last tried to catch these catfish. I never got one to hand on that trip. I found a bunch of madtoms in a calm pool. They would shy away from my headlamp. I found that I could find the fish using the high intensity beam and then turn it down once I spotted fish close enough for me to drop a bait near the fish. Maybe it was the lack of heavy flow, but once I got my bait near a madtom it wasn't long before the fish would circle the bait like the sharks you see on nature shows targeting a chum block. I got bit often and like the last time would get the fish up an out of the water, but not into my hand for a photo and release. I finally got a solid hook set and landed this slender madtom ! The madtom and blacknose shiner are the 16th and 17th new lifelist species that I have caught since March. Now if I could just catch a flathead catfish!

Tonight my Betterhalf made lasagna. We had made tomato sauce this summer using seconds that she picked up while amish shopping. She thawed that out and browned burger, cooked onions and green peppers to make a more flavorful meat sauce. She assembled and cooked the lasagna while Livie and I were shooting at the nearby rifle range. Nice to come home with the house smelling like lasagna !

Norm keep strong! Don't worry the water will be waiting for you when you are able to get out and fish again!

MOPanfisher you cook soup the way that I like it with big cuts and lots of chicken☺! Looks good!

If you see a bigger buck then just feel that you were fortunate enough to see a couple of nice deer! Would not have passed on the one you did shoot. Congrats!

I have Monday through Thursday off next week. Really would like to get a chance at a few deer. May still try to fill my last firearms turkey tag over the weekend.
