  1. Decided to take a hike up around the Frisco trail and find a new spot or two. Found a nice little pool and started catching a few whites...and then...it happened.

The strike was hard, the fish was big, and staying deep...pulled it up to the surface to find a 24"-26" walleye that appeared to be tired out. I loosened the drag quite a bit and was just about to beach this beast and then two head shakes and she was gone..spit the bucktail jig id just made and that was that. Upon inspection id tied it on an older leadhead and the barb was pretty much worn to nothing...lesson learned

A few casts later i lost that bucktail in a tree..it was the only one i had so i went home to tie some more..brown and purple over white with some flash..20190422_165341.jpg

Ended up with about 10 whites and the one that got away..

If we get the rain that brings the river up tonight then the s curves should be loaded with fish next week. That gravel bar through there is always loaded with fly fisherman after you start catching fish in the riffles thru there.

Hmmm...maybe one of those fly fisherman will be me..

Easier to get there by water vs walking from Taylor fyi.

Phew! You were right Bologna...i walked it today and its a hike for sure. Cool area though. Fishes more like trout water with riffles, eddies, and pools. I will definitely have to get back up there with the flyrod next time. When i got up there i got two nice ones back to back but that was it...got em both on my homemade 1/16th oz. white hair jigs..they hit pretty aggressive so i was surprised that i couldnt convince a few more. Tried around Taylor before and after making the hike upriver, but no luck

It was rough yesterday morning between two of us we had 11.  We had to go past the scurves for them.

I keep hearing about these S curves...are they upstream from Taylor? Or the area downstream of the Orleans steel bridge?

  5. Hot dog! Got out to Taylor again this morning and they ate my homemade jigs!! Caught some on the all whites, and some on white/chartreuse. Tried like heck to get bit on the pink and white but couldnt come up with the trifecta...only got 7 or 8 but 2 of them were FAT sows..

    I learned two things:

There is nothing more satisfying than catching fish on a lure you made.

Also, there is nothing more painful than donating that same jig to the river bottom..

Now i need to tie more...

               MNtransplant,

Not sending you out to buy other colors but chartreuse over white and blue over white work. Just saying :) ,

Those jigs are nice man. Not sure if my clousers are sparse enough Ronnie but they are fishing just fine :).

You cant be without chartreuse over white, right??

  7. 20190326_152216.jpgPhew!....finally after 3 trips with nada I got off the schneide today.

I ended up with about a dozen really nice whites and one dink...all caught on the same $0.20 1/8th ouncewhite maribou jig from Walmart.

In the morning it needed to be a slow retrieve with a snap and fall action...they always picked it up on the fall and you had to let em grab it for a second before stickin it to em.

Closer to noon it needed to be a slightly faster (still slow) retrieve while putting a more subtle swimming action to the jig with the rod tip.

I was happy to find i hadnt lost my touch and could still pick up on subtle hits.

There was one other guy doing well on a small chartreuse plastic of some sort and a guy that came by in a boat had a few as well on the A rig.

Felt awesome to feel a few hard fighting whites on the end of the rod...thats what keeps us all comin back!

Now i gotta learn to tie some maribou jigs, any tips on where to buy some good maribou??

  8. Headed down to Taneycomo this morning to try the ole shad bite. Saw 8 or 9 floodgates open when i got there so i tied on a small XPS crankbait in a bone color...3 casts later whack! About a 16" rainbow...thought I was on go something but that was the only bite I had so I tried to my go to...a husky jerk in emerald ghost..with not many places to flick a cast from the bank, I headed down to the main outlet nearest to the parking lot. Saw a bunch of really nice sized fish that looked like they were midging near the surface...tried twitching the husky jerk thru several times with no takers...so then I got creative....

I tossed the bait right up near the fast water, kept the rod tip high, and skated it just a few inches below the surface..Boom! Saw the jaw of a huge Brown (probably 5 or 6 pounds) blow up on it sending the bait a couple feet into the air...missed em! Tried a few more like that and had two other rainbows blow up and miss...kind of cool and now I see why guys fish dries!

I decided I couldn't wait any longer to try for some whites in the Little Sac. I got to Orleans about 10:30 Thursday morning and got my boat unloaded and started trying it underneath the bridge. No luck, so I head to mouth of Walnut Creek and give that a try. Still no luck so I continue heading downstream towards the lake. As I turn the bend below Orleans I talked to a guy fishing from the bank, he had 2 whites on his stringer. This gets me a little excited because it means at least a few fish have made it into the river. I try the mouth of the little creek there on the left as you turn the corner headed towards the lake. Still no bites, so I continue down that long eddy. This is about 2 and a half hours into my trip so I decide I'm gonna head back to the truck and go to Taylor to give it a try. I toss my jig out to troll back to the truck and BAM I get my first bite and fish... nice sized male white. I cast out and immediately catch another. The wind is blowing crazy hard and has pushed me into the bank by this point so I troll back out past where I caught the fish and catch another on my way out. I'm upset at myself for leaving my anchor in the truck at this point because I am going to have to fight the wind to stay close to the spot where I'm catching them. I proceed to catch my limit in the next hour. All the fish came from the same spot, they were laying on the backside of a mud point out of the main river channel. I caught them all on a purple swimmin minnow on an 1/8 ounce leadhead.

My buddy called me that night and said that he would like to go back over Friday. I told him if I could talk my wife into letting me go 2 days in a row then I would love to try again. We put the boat in around 1 Friday afternoon at Orleans. We headed downriver towards the lake. Did not even get a nibble until we turned the corner at the top of the long eddy. Then we put 27 whites on the stringer (threw back 4 or 5 of the tiny males) on the mud flat between the old bridge pillars below Aldrich and the corner to turn into the long eddy below Orleans. All the fish were in the main river channel and caught on a purple swimmin minnow. We even caught a couple of nice sows. He had one that went 17 inches and I had two between 15 and 16 inches. I am super excited to start off with this much water in the river, hopefully they will start up the river anytime.

Nice report baller. Confirms what I was thinking, that the fish are still staging at the mouths and not fully moved into the river in numbers yet. Glad you found them...i know Ive heard a ton of guys say it and Ive even experienced it myself but when you find the seams or slack water near moving water you'll find the fish. I looked hard for some of those areas around Orleans on Sunday but with the water so high it was tough to find anything that looked fishy close to the shore. Would probably be a little easier in a boat too I imagine. I'm still trying to convince my wife that we need a little 14 foot flat bottom instead of the fish and ski that she's been eyin' 😁

I may try up around Taylor in a couple weeks since that skinnier water might be good for wading with the flyrod.

  10. Got the green light from the wifey to fish for a couple hours this afternoon so I headed up to the steel bridge in search of some whites..zero bites..tried a white maribou jig, a chartreuse kip tail on the Fly rod, a beetle spin with an orange and chartreuse hair jig, and after that didn't work, tried a 5" white fluke on a 1/4 oz head to see if any walleye were hanging around...no dice...

I still think we got a few more weeks before it gets good. And actually looking back at my notes last year, I didn't start having my best luck up there last year until the end of April...probably just wishful thinking to start catching them early...

I'd like to pass the time chasing some walleye or smallies down along the James...I have some areas in mind but any advice on favorite lures or techniques from the James veterans out there?

Tight Lines guys...Waiting for prime time spring fishing to kick in like a kid at Christmas 😁
