Took Friday off and flyfished a couple water bodies, hoping for bass, crappies, etc. Caught Bluegills, Green Sunfish, Largemouth Bass, a Redear Sunfish, and a very strong Channel Catfish.
Yes, like @fishinwrench said... the mirage and prop kayaks I'm familiar with have rudders, with controls somewhere near the seat. The Hobie Outback I used to have had a control lever on one gunwale that raised or lowered the rudder, and the control on the other gunwale controlled turning the rudder left or right.
164 Grassies on the year. Caught at least 6 on Saturday. Probably done, but who knows.
4 small Channel Catfish:
2 Bluegills and 2 White Bass (and lost a nice largemouth bass):
Caught plenty of Black Bullheads:
And caught 8 Goldfish, including a few really nice ones, I measured one at 11":
Didn't fish over the weekend, but took Monday off work to fish with a friend from out-of-state who swung by to add to his flyrod species list. He had Koi already, but didn't have Goldfish. We caught both. He's up to 192 species on fly!
Here's ones I caught. Koi:
Goldfish:
I agree that's a tough one. I'm not sure I could tell them apart...at least not from the pictures shown. Maybe in person....if you could get a better look at the tail, for example.
@Johnsfolly I found it interesting that paper showed a map with the Northern Sunfish (Lepomis peltastes) all up through Iowa. I've NEVER heard of any being caught in Iowa. Further research mentioned they had been found in Iowa, but are presumed extirpated.
I thought I heard Missouri only has 2 kinds of sunfish,... Brim/Bream and Perch? π
Lepomis solis and Lepomis aquilensis... those will be tough for folks to sort out...I couldn't find ANY information or photos online of either of these at the present time. There's an opportunity here, @Johnsfolly and @Ham for one of you guys to be THE PERSON who publishes the defining morphological characteristics of these "new" species! π
I DO need a Redbreast Sunfish. And Northern Sunfish. And Spotted Sunfish....to get all 13 Lepomis species. All on FLY!
I did good toward that goal with your help @Johnsfolly and @Ham this year. I added Dollar, Bantam, Redspotted, and Warmouth to my fly rod list.
Just saw this now...ironically, I mentioned to my wife this past weekend that we should kayak a river sometime. There's so many choices, I don't know where to start looking....obviously somewhere that rents kayaks.
