  1. Rusty. For a family that has never had cancer in it in the past, our generation is really changing things.
  2. Results of a biopsy show that my little cousin a few years younger than me has cancer. Its in his lymph node from his salivary gland. He may have a rougher time than I did
  3. I know my neighbors just enough now. They live too close and they tend to distract me from time to time. And I have to watch out for them when I step out to shoot somethng. I grew up without them for the most part, it was a half mile hike either way to see them. All I had to avoid shooting was livestock.
  4. That was the reason I was looking at it. More farm income when I quit my day job and start living off the land. But its a hard way to make a little cash. Weather plays a big factor. Other things like neighbors spraying pesticides can knock a hive down pretty quick. It may have been what got my hives, no real easy way to tell. Right now it is a learning process. I have had things go so well from the start to this summer, then everything collapses. Back to starting point almost.
  5. Missed the point about it not being a live report.
  6. Not much of a bee business for sale anymore. Down to 3 hives at the house today. Had a nice bonfire of burning bee equipment. I tossed about 100 bucks of frames on the pit to burn from the 2 dead hives this week. Pretty sad. Nothing to do to stop it, just sit back and clean up mess when its over. I started burning stuff today because I am out of storage for the stuff. And it was so eat up with moth larva that I did not want to fool with it.
  7. Hmm. At 28 degrees, that shirt I sweated thru this afternoon would have froze stiff. Of course, that high up, I doubt they had the 9 inches of rain this week and the 200 percent humidity soup here. Looks like a good road trip. Bring me back a snowball.
  8. Not a good idea. I just flushed that catfish again out of my live well with a fresh dose of bleach. At least I can stick my head under the cover now without puking.
  9. The best way I have seen is to remove the hook gently and let them back in the water. I know you have to drag them around for tournament purposes. But if you put one in the boat, you might as well eat it and not let it go to waste.
  10. They made a movie about a plant like that. Wait till it heads for the clouds.
  11. The trip brought up another touch of reality. There is a bashing going on in another thread. 100 years ago, the entire area I was touring was a decimated wasteland. Logging had taken its toll, forests and wildlife were gone. Thanks to the MDC and the NFS, it is a nice scenic area to spend time in. Not pristine and totally wild, but beautifully forested and managed pretty well.
  12. I seldom eat at chain restaurants, either on or off vacation. Sometimes but seldom. Limited cell phone access is a must on trips like that also.
  13. I saw a crowd there. I was in there years ago. Used to hit antiques in Arcadia, but almost all shops are gone. Its nice to have trips without purposes or missions. More relaxing.
  14. Unless they bought out another vendor in the area or "made" a new livery license with the feds, you will have to float with a different camp. I guess you could drag a boat down the little crick to get to Current River if you are dedicated enough. Those RV sites I saw looked pretty brutal. I am sure the pad and hookups are first class, but no shade or privacy from other campers. I did not make it to parts of the park, the overlook we were at showed another portion we did not drive too. Maybe the primitive side, if they have one.
  15. We had one of those weekends with absolutely nothing to do. No kids, grandkids, or plans with anyone else. So I decided we would take a road trip. There are so many places I go to float and fish that have so much more to offer. But I never seem to have the time to look around. It was always camp, float, camp, float, then leave. Sometimes I would look around on a rain out. Did you know Alley Springs campground had a old mill and a spring to tour? I have camped there many times and never visited. Same thing with Round Springs. I never looked at the spring or took the cave tour. All of those brown signs pointing out points of interest along the way that I never had time to look at. Tossed the clothes and drinks in the truck and left out. Brunch at Baily Jo's in Arcadia, nice BBQ meal. Toured the Fort Davidson Site, something I had not done in 10 years. Drove to the top of Tom Sauk Mountain and looked around there. Things have really changed there also. Went down to Taum Sauk lake and looked around, no tour of the upper lake anymore since the remodel. Lake looks fishable again. Down thru Lesterville, across to Black, thru Salem, then out to Licking. Spent the night at the Tarry Inn, had another fine BBQ Dinner at Olig's BBQ. Checked out Sunday morning, breakfast at Chris's Diner which had a good breakfast buffet. Hit Welch Spring from the bank, something I had not done in many years. Across and down the Devils Backbone to Akers Ferry where we looked at Current River from a broken down ferry. Next stop was the Devils Well which has been revamped since the last time I was there many years ago. Across to 19 and down to Round Springs. Declined the cave tour, better half was not wanting to do a 2 hour tour with just a battery lantern in a hole in the ground. Walked up to the cave and toured the spring while we were there. Went back to Echo Bluff to see what the new park was about. I gave my review in another thread. Off to Eminence down 19 to Jack's Fork. Went to Alley Spring and toured the mill and spring. Had a nice greasy lunch at the Dairy Barn in Eminence. Veered back east on 106 and showed her 2 Rivers, a place I camp at from time to time. Drove to Rocky Falls for the first time. Interesting waterfall, a nice swimming hole on a warm day. It was busy. Drove around Powder Mill access. Came back thru Ellington, across Clearwater Lake and back to farm. Did not fish a lick. Never pitched a tent or cooked a meal all weekend. It was pretty relaxing. Only took a few minutes to unload the truck when it was all over.
  16. "Fish will be clambering over themselves to get in the livewell". Right now, you can't knock a fly off of it and the buzzards are circling. Looks like I have a few more weeks to worry about it. Montauk this coming weekend and jet boats on the 11pt the following weekend. Maybe it will air out some in the mean time.
  17. I have zucchini plants that are chest high and have the best foliage ever, but have never set a squash all summer. My third planting of okra has finally produced its first fruit. It is about a foot tall and made 2 piece of okra. My third planting of green beans are up and looking good. My zinnias, sunflowers, and wildflowers I planted amounted to nothing. I have no flowers. Cucumbers produced about 1 cuc a week and now have yellow blotches and are dying. Peppers are sickly and frail. Don't expect much there. Tomatoes did alright. Too wet and cold at start, then too dry and hot, now too wet again. If I was living off the land this year, I would be robbing the neighbors.
  18. Ancient Kings built temples, pyramids, and other monuments to themselves. Missouri has really overdone it on this one. Some of the best concrete roads in the state. State of the art architecture and design. A luxury bridge over a small crick. Huge lodge with meeting rooms and dining facility. Condos. RV sites packed in side to side out in the open. Thanks to a feller that had one party too many, Mo has built some park. Why did they put guard rails along the road that are already rusting on opening week? Most everywhere uses galvanized material that resists the elements. Were they trying to make it look "rustic"? I have a pic of an overlook where they used 3" square steel with a powdercoat inner grate. The steel tube is rusting already, I warned the better half not to lean on it. Why didn't they finish the metal? Overall, I was ashamed that someone spent so much money, my tax dollars and yours, on something so fickle. They really overdid it. And there is only a little crick running thru it.
  19. I never seem to find a bright enough spotlight when running to the duck blind in the morning. Fog always seems to eat the beam.
  20. Thanks for bringing the foamy gray mess back up. I think the smell still lingers in my nose hairs from Thurs. still.
  21. Just got it this spring.
  22. The bugs had it melted down to a few bones. I cleaned the live well with soapy water, but it still stinks like butt. Baking soda soak did nothing last night. Bleach maybe? I do have some orange cleaner to dump in there. It does not need scrubbed and there was no stain. Just a smell. Nice wet hot humid afternoon today, the smell really permeates everything. Just another good reason for catch and release.
  23. Any idea how to get the smell out? Other livewell was used as beer can collector. Smells like cat pissed in that one. I am thinking bleach. I dumped baking soda in for now.
  24. A buddy and I went fishing a week ago Sunday at a local lake. It was hot. We anchored up the boat under some trees with a good point dropoff in front of us. Fishing with chicken livers, we caught 7 nice 3-5 lb channel cat. It started heating up and we pulled off the lake. I went home with the catch in the livewells to clean fish. We had a great mess of catfish for supper. Last Thurs, while loading up the kayaks for a Spring River trip, I smelled something foul. At first I just thought it was the trash cans. Better half makes a statement, "it smells like it is in the boat". I lifted the cover and raised the seat over the back livewell and was greeted by an awful smell, flies, and a mess. When I was taking the fish out of the livewells, there was still a lively one that resisted being caught in that livewell. I decided to let it drain out and went to the front livewell to get the ones in that one. With the heat bearing down on me, I forget to go back and get the one in the back. I let it ripen until today, I had to clean it out before this weekend. It has melted down to a gray runny mess with maggots and some bones. I puked twice while I run water trying to flush out the mess. Used a pair of dollar store grabbers to get the bones out and tossed them. Flushed with detergent and dumped a box of baking soda in to get rid of the smell. YUK
  25. The story I read, it was a protest move because Nixon withheld funding to the Public Defender Program. Since Nixon was a former Attorney General, he was the obvious first pick. He is to be tasked to defend a felony thief I believe, but his name is being withheld from the public. I really don't see any problem, Nixon is a public servant with a law license. He should just serve his time like anyone else.
