Mitch f Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Let me just say I stopped playing "cops and robbers" when I was about 9. By that comment I'm assuming you weren't kidding. I think Paul Dallas will be very disappointed in you. It's a different world now than when you were 9. My parents used to let me ride a bike 5 miles to the local grocery store when I was 9 years old. I wouldn't dream of letting my kids do that now. Too many human predators. I don't think the vast majority of people are carrying because they are wanna be heros. fishinwrench Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 . My parents used to let me ride a bike 5 miles to the local grocery store when I was 9 years old. I wouldn't dream of letting my kids do that now. Too many human predators. I dont know where you live, but for your childrens sake, Move Soon! Oh nevermind, I already know.... if ya move away from the "human predators" then you'll still not let them explore their neighborhood for fear of mountain lions. What a shame, man.
Mitch f Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Go to familywatchdog.us and type in your address and watch the sex offenders light up like a Christmas tree. I have 20 registered sex offenders within 5 miles of my house. "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
eric1978 Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Mitch is basically my neighbor, and it's pretty safe out here. But it only takes one wacko to do something horrible, and it doesn't have to be five miles from here...could be right around the corner...or in the area around Lake O...or anywhere else. And I don't think we have any more nuts than we had 50 years ago, I just think we hear about every one of them now as soon as they do something nutty. It's a fine line you gotta walk with your kid between independence and protection. Hope I'm able to do it right.
Daryk Campbell Sr Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 In the city of St Louis, if you get caught urinating in public (even if not in view of anyone directly) you will be ticketed and added to that Sex Offenders List. Many of those "offenders" deserve to be on the list, but many do not. I can go on about this, but will save you all. I agree with Eric as far as not having any more nuts now than 50 years ago, We just have more Media. 50 years ago you would not have gotten word about a little boy from some town in Richwoods, MO who was abducted, nor about a girl from Utah. If you estimate how many children there are out there vs how many are abducted by people other than family members, your kids have a better chance of winning powerball without playing, than they do to be abducted. Let your kids live, let them enjoy the things you were allowed to enjoy. There are FAR more good people than bad. Justin Spencer Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 I let my 8 year old wander our property and up to the neighbors, But granted he is open carry with his BB gun, so at least maybe he can put out a mountain lions eye. He also knows to stay near our major trails so he won't get lost, and though it is somewhat of a risk it gives him a chance to chase squirrels and enjoy the outdoors without dad telling him to quiet down, or do this or that. stlfisher Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 I don't know I am a bit conflicted on guns in general. It might be a right under the consituition, but it was a very different world back then. I guess there are two ways to look at this and this is the best analogy I can come up with. Would you feel safer if every country had a nuclear weapon? Or would you feel safer if no one did? Pretty sure the Cuban Missile crisis didn't make anyone feel better, but we had lot's of weapons. I kinda feel the same way about handguns....the more that are around the greater the chance disputes can escalate and become deadly....especially in situations when emotion and adrenaline in an otherwise normal people cause them to make bad decisions. I would feel safer in a room in which no one had guns than in one in which everyone had one.
Smalliebigs Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 I tease his Rambo vigilante butt about it every chance I get, but he& stuck on it, just like all you wannabe heros. Just remind him to check that safety often and stay off the sauce. Andy, I am not a not a wannabe hero as you suggest.I have lingering effects from that night that cause me to have fear......thats it.I did not walk into the council chambers, I wasn't allowed to. I heard mabey the last two or three shots pumped into that piece of dung from the parking lot.Several cops were already on the scene and entering city halls side door in front of the police dept. They rounded everyone up at the scene and held us next door until they figured out who was who. I did see officer Biggs laying on the sidewalk with half of his head blown off at the corner of Lindebergh and Monroe though.I do know from a witness in the room and now mayor of Kirkwood that my friend Connie was the only one who confronted this piece of dung and she payed with getting her head blown off with a cops 44.Call me what you want Andy, my life is not riddled with fear as you insinuate but,I carry a gun now. I don't call anyone who dosen't carry a pistol a wannabe victim......don't really care.I would never carry in waders though but,I carry when I have to take pictures of a risk near Calvary cemetary or when I am alone out in the sticks. Make fun of me all you want......really doesn't matter too me.I was just stating there are reasons why people carry not just because they are wannabe heros as you suggest. You don't need to fear my guns, they are either locked in my safes at home or in a holster on my person and can't be discharged accidently.
ColdWaterFshr Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Lets pull the plug on this thread. Sorry for those I offended with my comments about wannabe heros or vigilantes. Lets go fishing sometime, SB.
