Discussion seems to have some mean spirited thoughts. I release all my bass and keep whites, crappies & some walleyes to eat. I've fished for 50 years and think I take pretty good care of my fish to be released. But think of the guy who catches 50-60 bass in a day as many threads boast of. If he releases them all, a 10% mortality rate would not be unusual. So he's killed just as many fish as the fella who fishes a couple times a year and keeps a legal limit to eat. Plus the guy catching 50 fish a trip probably fishes more often than the meat fisherman. We've all watched the pros on tv toss back a 10" fish with a head high toss. Do all those recover well? A great rule in the MLF shows are the gunnel high release or a penalty. Lets protect our great fishing but lets not be hatin' a few legal fish eaters.

Bill, where does that 10% mortality rate data come from? I can assure you that I do not mortally injure anywhere near 10% of the fish I catch.

Certain pros on TV may throw their fish high in the air but that does not happen in my boat. Donna and I ... or whoever my guest may be that day ... take every precaution to ensure the healthy release of our fish. Donna has dang near a surgeon's kit in her fishing bag that helps us delicately remove hooks in vital areas.

I'm not saying all C&R folks are that careful with their catch, but some of us certainly are.

And as I've said many times before, I'm not hatin' anyone except terrorists, people who abuse children or animals, etc. Legal fish eaters can do as they wish, but myself and many others on this forum will not remain silent on our commitment to C&R because some people think that whatever is legal must be OK for the future of the fishery.

I'm sure it depends on a lot of factors (water temp, method used to capture fish, barbless vs barbed, etc), but I'd love to see the studies that say a 10% mortality rate for immediately released fish is normal. I would guess that it is much less than that, but that is a guess.

I'm starting to think that a few of you don't fish anymore, just set around and cry on the computer. 21.5 Smallmouth this morning. Beetle Spin. Houghton Lake, MI.

21.5 inch smallie. Very Nice. Lucky You.

I managed to fish 4 days last week. I floated a little of 50 river miles. First with one good friend and then with another good friend. It was wonderful and I caught right at 200 fish over the four days. Life has been getting in the way of my fishing this year. Especially in May and it threatens to do so again for the next couple of months, but so it goes.

Right now I'm stuck on 26 species and 1567 fish caught (if I am remembering my numbers correctly).

And still no gizzard shad...

I know rightI I'll have another shot at some Skipjack Shad this fall. And I'll have the gizzard shad spawn deal in the back of my mind for next year. I have some more stuff to try on them. I'll be ready for them.

So you are spending time on the computer to criticize us for spending time on the computer. Alrighty, then! :blur:
