I met a nieghbor who is a paddling fanatic with more watercrafts than I could ever dream of. He is also a new forum member here after I showed him the site. Anyway I met this guy paddling in the flood water at the bottom of Marshall rd where it meets the river now. I saw him in a sweet Winonah canoe and thought," I'm gonna paddle out there". So I ran back up the road and brought a kayak back down to the flood. I launched from the road where there was still thick current even thought the actual river channel was over a quarter mile away. I paddled upstream towards Golf range and balls fields and everything was great, just as I was about to start taking some pics, I became lodged on a street sign in a scupper hole, I just wasn't paying attention and sight seeing to hard.....anyway when I tried to dislodge the yak from the sign I flipped the yak in murky thick current that was about 10 to 12 foot deep, which was actually Treecourt Industrial drive....the water temps felt like 38. It startled me at first and I had to do some serious swimming, it was actually scary and I consider myself a very good swimmer and getting back on a yak in deep water with soaked clothes is not easy......I am a friggin moron!!!!!.....I had a cold paddle back to my truck and was just about hypothermic by the time I got back to my house and hosed a $650 phone. At least I survived to be able to hit some rivers this year.....scared the shiot out of me and crushed a what pride I may have.......don't be stupid like me!!! I AM A MORON So SmallieB... Did you put whip topping on your humble pie? Man, I'm so glad your alright. Did you have a life vest on?

No lifevest......actually it would have happered me some IMO......I would have gone cold much faster floating around with a life vest......swimming like my life depended on it kept me warmer IMO......pretty stupid on my part......just too desperate to get out on the water at this point and not making good decisions
Hog Wally Posted January 4, 2016 Posted January 4, 2016 Well, now I k ow why you wouldn't answer your phone. I got sucked into a culvert pipe once and came out on the other side I had waders on too. And it was in January. I had buddies with me to help or I'd of died for certain.
fishinwrench Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 I spent the first 6-8 years of my daughters life getting her to be comfortable with water and the river. Now she is 20 and worries me to death. She spent New Years in the virgin isles and saw another 20y/o girl get careless and drown. Sad deal, but hopefully it imprints a little reality into her fearless nature.
Members Tim McDougald Posted January 5, 2016 Members Posted January 5, 2016 Glad you lived to tell the tale.
jdmidwest Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 Actually the life jacket might have saved your life. The body's normal reaction to frigid water is suck up and quit breathing or suck in a lung of water. The jacket would have kept your head up till the initial shock was over. I always wear a life jacket when fully clothed, in waders, or when the water is cold enough to create a shock. Glad you made it out. bkbying89 1 "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
ness Posted January 5, 2016 Posted January 5, 2016 Alright, I guess I'll be the one to say it: Incredibly stupid Smalliebigs -- on a multiple different levels. Sorry. Aren't you a husband and father of a couple young kids? Flood waters...winter...no vest. Anyone of those alone is a risk. The time to figure out something is incredibly stupid to do is before you start. You were about 10 seconds away from being a Darwin Award recipient. Happy for your wife and kids they've still got you. Aw, shucks. I guess I'm happy we've still got you here at OAF too Flysmallie and BilletHead 2 John

I am not some old fat clown that get's out of breath quite easy.....well I'm about to turn 47 but.....I have swam in colder water. I agree it wasn't smart on many levels
