Members Willyh08 Posted January 23, 2016 Members Posted January 23, 2016 Went to the KC boat show today just to hear Mr Ned rig himself talk. Was like a trip down memory lane with a lot of terrific stories about how the Mid-West started the whole finesse fishing craze. Ned gave a great talk. I was mostly surprised at the rods &reels he used - low end but suited to him. Well worth the trip to hear what he has to say.
Ham Posted January 23, 2016 Posted January 23, 2016 I have relatives that are excellent fisher many and their gear is CRAP. I wonder how good they could be with even decent gear. dtrs5kprs Posted January 23, 2016 Posted January 23, 2016 The eccentric bits are the bailless reels, and short rods. Honestly, compared to most folks, my little rig gear is far from high end either. $60 daiwas and home built rods, except for my Eyecons. Rods like Loomis and other higher modulus blanks are almost a detriment. I've thrown it a bit on a GLX, and was not excited. Had a good friend from my club days who fished Lightning Rods and $30 Walmart house brand rods. He thumped us with a fury. Still have to throw it in the right place.
roy_eros Posted January 23, 2016 Posted January 23, 2016 Hey dtrs5kprs, got any Ned rig heads for sale, think I bought some from you last year but I lost your contact info?
Sam Posted January 23, 2016 Posted January 23, 2016 A guy I fish with uses a couple of Mitchell 300 spinning reels that date from the 1960's, attached to cheap, old, limp-noodle rods. His reels are spooled with Shakespeare 6 lb. mono that he last changed 4 or 5 years ago, and I don't think they've ever been cleaned or oiled - it sounds like he's grinding coffee when he turns the handles. When he gets even a good crappie on, those rods are so soft the tip bends over pretty near his hands and him fighting a bass or a white bass on one of those things is truly a sight to behold. He routinely out-fishes me.
Old plug Posted January 23, 2016 Posted January 23, 2016 I have 2 Presidents, and a couple of bait casters in that range. I only have 7 rods and they are all cherrywood. For some people Its not about price it something like driving a $65,000 dollar Caddy when you only need A little Ford Focus. Makes them feel better and above others. mjk86 1
Quillback Posted January 23, 2016 Posted January 23, 2016 I know some people who feel better and above others that fish low end stuff. Kind of a 'Holier than thou' thing. Not that I care that much who uses what and what they paid for it. mjk86, dtrs5kprs, Champ188 and 2 others 5
mjk86 Posted January 23, 2016 Posted January 23, 2016 I like this thread. It's nice to hear folks talking about getting the Job done with cheaper gear.

Hmmmmm - this got me thinking....I use moderate / modest gear for my Nedding.....but I do carry it around in a fairly high priced rig that the bank has bought me I am not sure it makes me feel any better and above anyone else.....I guess it is just how I want to stimulate the economy! What would my banker do if I didn't have the boat? Just poking fun Old Plug..... C4F Champ188 1 Crazy4fishinA Cornhusker
