2016 Fish Species

Only been out twice so far Saturday and tonight so species count is not much but, bluegill, small mouth, largemouth, white bass, black crappie, and tonight walleye and a kentucky.

Hmm...largest number of species in a single trip.  I used to make a float or two every spring on the upper St. Francis, targeting crappie and using small white marabou jigs.  I remember at least one trip where I caught about every kind of sunfish possible on the St. Francis--bluegill, green sunfish, longear, shadow bass, war mouth--plus black and white crappie, largemouth, and spotted bass (I was fishing in the far upstream sections where smallmouth are practically non-existent).  So...9 species.  I also remember a trip on the Meramec when I caught all three species of bass, plus rock bass, green sunfish, walleye, and drum.  7 species.  I'm pretty sure the nine species was the best I've ever done.

I agree with Ham in that I track those fish I catch with hook and line and a rod of some sort. My daughter likes to hand catch or net some of her fish, which is fine by me. I would think that when I lived in Florida and bottom fished offshore, I would catch more variety on a given trip than I have fishing freshwater. I didn't record my catches then like I do now. So I cannot confirm the total number of species on any given trip. My best so far has been 6 species; long-eared, green, and bluegill sunfish, largemouth and smallmouth bass, and northern rock bass. I wasn't fishing any of my small minnow baits or I could have caught bleeding shiners, creek and hornyhead chubs on that same trip.

If you were talking about a single day, my best would be 9 species. Some friends and I set up the Ozark Slam, which is catching a rainbow and brown trout, and a largemouth, smallmouth, and rock bass all on the same day. So far we have done this a couple of times and had to fish two different rivers/creeks to complete the slam. On one of those trips I caught brown and rainbow trout, banded sculpin, northern rock bass, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, green sunfish, bluegill sunfish, and long-eared sunfish. Again I was not targeting any smaller species or else the total could have been higher.

My most diverse day I think I got 6 different species to date. Red Ribbon area at Suicide Hill, I caught Largemouth, Striped Shiner, Sunfish of some sort (think Longear), Brown Trout, Smallmouth, and White Crappie. That was just ahead of my first Meramec Springs trip this year, when I got 5, including Rainbow Trout, Largemouth, Smallmouth, Brown Trout and Rock Bass (John's Ozark Slam without even knowing it).

So far this year I am at 8 species. Rainbow trout, Brown trout, Bluegill, Long-eared sunfish, Goggle Eye, Drum, Striped Bass, and a itty bitty Large-mouth Bass

Friday I was able to land the following: central stonerollers, green sunfish, Ozark sculpin, striped shiners, brown and rainbow trout. Got sick and have not been back out since then. Currently up to ten species since the 1st of March.

Slow year for me thus far... I have only been out a handful of times but I have Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, White Bass, Largemouth, Kentucky, Bream and Walleye.

Sitting at 13 species so far. The ball should get rolling a lot faster once it warms up a bit. I'll likely get stuck around 35 species again. we'll see.

If the 35th is a gizzard shad it will be perfectly done.
