I actually had a pair go through the spawning process twice that I witnessed. Made the nest, did the dance, the whole deal but it didn't produce any off spring.

Going to have to give the longears another shot after hearing that report. Bigger tank sounds like the key to maintaining the color and natural behaviour.

I haven't used a chiller for the sunfish, but never saw the water temp over the mid 70's. I use good filtered water when topping off or replacing after a water change. I actually got it too filtered at one point and they had issues with their fins. I backed off a bit and it seems fine now. Never had a problem with coloration and I just have creek gravel in there. Some wood and big rocks. Meals consisted of shrimp pellets mostly (it's easy), mealworms, worms from the garden and grasshoppers in season. Right now it's pretty empty. I let the inhabitants free before fall, there were only three of them and were starting to push the boundaries of what that 90 gallons could do for them.  It's about time to take the kids out to find new smaller guests.

Flysmallie,  I'd love to see a separate thread with pics of your setup if you don't mind sharing!  Kiddos lost their faithful old Beta after 6 long years of life(had to be some kind of record :) ) in a flower vase, and I've been wanting to setup another 'real' tank.

When I spoke with my wife about setting up this tank, she really wondered where would we put it in the house. I think that there was a "priorities" statement that went into this discussion as well. Still in my early assessment phase (could take another year or two). Maybe my son will be out of the house before I make the move on this aquarium. He is a Sophomore. So not too much time before he leaves the nest (hopefully).

Give me a couple of weeks and I will. I'm going to start breaking it down tomorrow for a thorough cleaning before the new residents arrive. Right now there is only a freshwater dragon eel, a goldfish and one lonely snail. My youngest daughter won that goldfish at a fair about 5  or 6 years ago. We kept it at home forever and it was a couple inches long. After I released my gills I put it in the office aquarium and now it's around 8 inches. He has to go. The dragon, which isn't really an eel at all, was dumped in there by another guy here at work. It's became a bit of a fish rescue center. A school teacher had 17 guppies that I took in, they even had babies, but the dragon definitely has an appetite for guppies and they are all gone. So it's out with the fish humane society and back to some fish from the Ozarks.

High winds pushed me to a change of plans. I took care of something's that needed doing instead of fishing Bull Shoals.

I did sneak in a micro fishing trip. Used #16 dry fly hooks and small pieces of red wigglers. Money.

My son and I caught 8 species of fish in an hour.

I added several species for the year and a new fish to my life list. Rainbow Darter!

sitting on 19 species so far.

Ham - did you get a photo of the darter? Love to see it.

I fished the Spring river right off of Rt 97 north of Stott's city in SW MO and also access in Robert Talbot CA. I caught cardinal shiners (new life list species, they were not in spawning coloration yet) and a banded sculpin bringing my 2016 list up to 19 total species as well and four new life list species. I'll post photos once I have a chance to download off of my camera.

shoot me a text at 870- 7 three 6- three 1 three 0. I have a picture. It is awful though. I simply must get a better system for getting a picture of the fish in water. Clear bug box or clear plastic bag.
