dblades Posted April 17, 2016 Posted April 17, 2016 So I finally got out for a little fishing Thursday. Pulled into one of my favorite spring coves on the White, I've fished for several years. Thought I'd try a little split shot rig I like to use. After a couple of cast I notice the line above my bait is absolutely SHREDDED. The zebra mussels must have taken over this cove. Is anyone else finding places they are really thick? How bad are they gonna get? Is it gonna get as bad as Dardenelle?
Quillback Posted April 17, 2016 Posted April 17, 2016 I haven't seen any up the White myself, or had a shredded line deal like that.
Ham Posted April 17, 2016 Posted April 17, 2016 Take a little trip down to K Dock and you'll see what's coming to TR eventually. The lakes are too close and people are too complacent. Hopefully, the Zebra's won't negatively impact fish populations. They will negatively impact the lure population in your tackle box. I don't know what scuffed up you line, but usually Zebra mussels just cut right thru. You'll see scuffing on the part you get back. mixermarkb 1 Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. abkeenan Posted April 17, 2016 Posted April 17, 2016 Maybe check the line guides on your rod to see if there isn't an issue there? tho1mas 1
Champ188 Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 I haven't encountered any zebras yet either and I fish more in the White than anywhere.
denjac Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 I bet it's the last guide on your rod causing the problem. Dennis Boothe Joplin Mo. For a nation to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle." ~ Winston Churchill ~
dblades Posted April 18, 2016 Author Posted April 18, 2016 Guys I know it's mussels. The line was just touching the mussels, a centipede doesn't weight much at all, and it was shaving the line, actually leaving long shreds and nicks between the weight and the bait. It's impossible for it to be a guide as this part of the line wasn't going thru any. I retied and cast a couple of times to double check what I was seeing. Had the line cut on a couple of fish that hit also on a fresh setup.
skeeter Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 Is this the first report of Zebras in TR or have I missed others ? Thanks.
dtrs5kprs Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 I'm having a one on one war with what I think is a walleye on one of my brown fish spots. Solid meaty tap, swing, snip. Did have a brownie Saturday spit up a little shell, but it wasn't a zebra. Think it's still in the boat.
Ham Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 I've never had a walleye bite me off that way, but I did have whatever is happening to Dave happen to me at TR. I know CajunAngler lost like 4 Neds in one day to gar on BSL. It was funny (to me anyway). I never got a look from a gar that day. dan hufferd 1 Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future.
