David Unnerstall Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 I am 57 and never even felt the cold until last year and this year is even worse. I am surprised and disappointed by this. But I concentrate on keeping warm from the neck up. A turtleneck or a scarf and one of those hats with the flaps that you tie under your chin. My fingers get cold and they hurt and then my body compensates by rushing the blood to them. The cold blood that is in the hands then returns to my body dropping my body temperature and making me nauseous for about five minutes but after that all is fine.

Stuff is amazing. I have the tops & bottoms. a tight-knit wool sweater over the UA and a quilted BP hooded jacket is all I need on top. Old pair of sweatpants over the UA and then a rainsuit bottom. Not stylin', but warm. Another trick that works for me is to "march" on the deck for a few minutes just before headin out to next spot. Looks silly as heck, but it gets the blood pumpin. Bushbeater Posted December 19, 2016 Posted December 19, 2016 Anyone have any thoughts on the Military ECWCS clothing. It seems to be somewhat difficult to find in the proper sizes but I've heard it is hard to beat.
Bass Enforcer Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 I'm not sure if we tend to over think or ober spend trying to stay warm. I will say the best way I have ever learned to stay warm is to dress in layers. I am a firm believer dressing in layers is the way to go. This is what I do and I seldom get to cold. Pull over winter hat, neck warmer, Tee shirt, short and long sleeve shirt, sweat shirt, fleece, hoodie and some sort of wind breaker up top. For the bottom,I wear, long johns blue jeans and again some sort of wind breaker and a pair of jogging pants if needed. For my wind breakers I purchased about 5 year ago a red head windproof/waterproof jacket and pants on sale for $28.00 each from bass pro. They are awesome. I sit in my tree stand all day in them as well. I don't wear gloves much when I'm fishing other than while driving my boat. I also keep a "buddy heater" in my boat. To warm my hands back up when needed. Although I forgot it the other day and my hands did get cold but I was able to fight through it. As far as socks I wear a pair of winter socks and a pair of lace up boots. All of this and I still feel like I have plenty mobility.
jdmidwest Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 Layers are the trick. Stay away from anything cotton near the skin, it absorbs moisture and will make you cold. Always a polypropolene or wool base layer. Then a fleece layer followed by an outer shell of Gore-tex to block wind and breath. Neck gaiter and a hat. Cover the ears if temps below 20, otherwise keep them out to hear. The main thing is to layer and let everything breath. Gonna probably spend $120 for tops and bottoms. I work outside so I can justify the expense.
Sore Thumbs Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 You can find some sales on that stuff every now and then. Keep an eye out for them to go on sale.
