MOPanfisher Posted January 17, 2017 Posted January 17, 2017 I had ro watch the video several times. It appeared that the steering started to go before the crash. Driver appeared to be attempting to maneuver back into the center instead of over the previous boats wake. When he went over the wake it bow hooked and was gone faster than you could say it. I don't know that a short lanyard would have dono anything there as at least one of the occupants was still visabLE when the boat stopped, however I can see how if you just got bounced out of position the lanyard might not kill the engine and you would be trying to get back into the seat at 70 MPH. The auto-inflatable certainly deployed which is a good thing, scary stuff. Happily my boat wont.go.fast enough to be that scary.

Heck, the lanyard on most boats will allow you to walk halfway to the front deck. I'm not a big fan of hotfoots either, they can be a good thing or a bad thing. 2 hands on the wheel is good, but constantly fluctuating throttle position is bad. A water bottle rolling around on the floor, or any other clutter is bad, and I see alot of messy boats with Hotfoot throttles. That particular area under the console seems to be a magnet for anything laying loose in a boat. That is so true. I can take line off of a reel and throw it in the trash at my house by the end of the fishing day that line is somehow wrapped around my hot foot. Ha Champ188 and Deadstream 2
gabe Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 I Had a similar mishap that occurred as a co-angler at a BFL on lake Eufaula, OK. Thankfully, the boat was slowing down preparing to go under a bridge in a idle only area. The entire engine broke off the jack plate and we did a 180. No one was hurt or thrown out but it was a scary deal. Here are a couple of pics : one with the motor off in the lake hanging by the fuel lines and the other at the ramp where we were towed. abkeenan Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Wow Gabe, that's insane. I am surprised the weight of the motor didn't just pull out all the wiring and sink. A 150HP motor is in the 500lb range. I guess maybe the steering cables saved your friends bacon.

fishinwrench Posted January 18, 2017 Posted January 18, 2017 Woah! The tilt ram even broke? I see no signs of impact, so WTH caused that? The only thing I can think of is that you hit a big bump while trailering and it shook the motor hard enough to partially snap the mount. I can see that the motor was mounted on the 3rd hole down, higher on the jackplate than it should have been. No reason to do that unless the jackplate wouldn't raise it high enough ! And judging by the position of the jackplate I'd say that's exactly why. Poor choice of jackplate if so.

Ha A foot throttle is standard on the G2 but you can turn it off or on with the push of a button on the "smart gauge". I've never liked foot throttles and, consequently, have never had one before. I still use the hand throttle probably 90% of the time. However, the one on the G2 is virtually identical to the accelerator pedal in most vehicles, so it's actually really comfortable to use. It's also mounted/suspended from above like a vehicle so getting stuff wrapped around it or stuck underneath is almost a non factor. Nonetheless, I still rarely use it primarily due to lack of familiarity I guess. It is kind of beneficial in really rough water though and that's pretty much the only time it's engaged other than just playing around with it from time to time since it's new. A nice option to have though as opposed to being restricted to one method or the other. I DO really like the auto trim feature though. Never thought that I'd use it but under most conditions it works great. One less distraction when coming up on plane and normal running and it immediately disengages if you just tap the manual trim button on the throttle or the blinker trim.
