jdmidwest Posted April 7, 2017 Author Posted April 7, 2017 One thing I noticed around here. Due to lack of snow this year, leaves are thick and fluffy making it hard to spot morels. We did not have a snowfall that made the ground white here this year. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
DChance Posted April 7, 2017 Posted April 7, 2017 Just moved to a place with 40 acres of woods last summer.only been snooping around my land trying to find them. None yet, but is seems promising. wet weather creeks, may apples all around, mossy spongy soil in many areas. I would love to not have to travel to hunt these little morsels. have every other type of mushroom on the property. The chanterelles in the fall are super thick and those are delicious too. Johnsfolly Posted April 10, 2017 Posted April 10, 2017 BH Nice haul from SW MO! I may not even show them to her. However, the Folly fungus foragers have been busy ourselves. Here in Boone county finding small grays and a few small yellows. My betterhalf and Livie found about 20 on Thursday. I went out with them yesterday and we found about two dozen. Again nothing like the size that you have found, but we seem to be about 4 to 6 days behind you this season. I will be in Maryland this week and likely to miss finding any large ones myself (may also miss the best time for spawning crappie). Will have to keep the rest of the team out looking. I haven't even tasted one this season. Of course there is also love in the air. We found a couple of box tortoises yesterday. JestersHK, dan hufferd, grizwilson and 2 others 5

DChance Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 Well haven't had any luck on my new property. kind of doubting they are there. I am in Rolla area, are we still a bit early in the season? seems we are a little bit.
ness Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 I would stick with it. You always hear a lot at the beginning of the season. It's human nature to want to get out and be first, but the season goes on for weeks. It's just harder to see then when the grass grows up and leaves fill in. John
MOPanfisher Posted April 11, 2017 Posted April 11, 2017 Its always very condition dependent as well. Right now my places are dry again, need another rain and more would pop. Also early in the season they will tend to be in more open spots that get more sunlight, as the soil warms the "fruits" will tend to be more in shady places, usually ones that have thorns like Multiflora Roses, or maybe mine are just in some sort of symbiotic relationship with them.
