Once you go Black you won't go back....lol

I had a Suzuki outboard in Florida, never had any problems out of it.

LOL, Ketchup.  I agree the Yamahas are very little trouble.  That's why I have ran one for over 20 years.  I live in the Dallas area for 15 years some great fishing down there.  I had to make some adjustments fishing these deep clear lakes.  I miss the days of having 50 lb braid and just go out flipping.  if you caught 3 six pounders it was just an average day.

Born in Sherman.  Most of my family still live there, or in Denison.  We make it down there a few times  a year. Love Fork and planning a trip soon.

They are fine.  Honda's too.   But if the only place to get knowledgeable service is at a dealer.....And dealers are 400 miles apart, and go out of business every 2 years.....Well.....

I totally understand that wrench...there where Yamaha and Suzuki dealers and shops that worked on them all over the place in Florida back then..1986 was the year i owned and all i ever did was water pump every year and 1 fuel pump in the 10 years owned it. On this 1995 135 merc i have now, seems im always working on it...now im putting all new coils on it and all new line bleeders, it is a carbed motor, im just glad it's not computerized...lol

All new coils?  Somebody is getting questionable diagnostics.   ?

I found one bad coil and i work on all my own stuff and im the type of guy if one is bad sooner or later others are to follow..im old school and i did get a pretty good price on them and they are suppose to be Mercury coils..and i do have a mercury factory manual...lol

How did you determine the one coil was bad ?

Here's why I ask.....  If you swapped coil positions and the no-fire/weak fire situation moved with the suspected coil then yes that coil is bad.  But if DVA readings weren't taken at the coil primary's then you will eventually burn up the new coil that is installed in the same location.

Ignition coils don't just blink out like a lightbulb, they die for a reason.  Usually the reason is low primary voltage from the switchbox that causes that particular coil to always run hot.  Eventually that extra heat makes it weak.  And to compound things even further.... that low switchbox output may be because of low stator output, which was caused from the stator trying to charge a bad battery once upon a time, or trying to charge a battery with a loose or dirty terminal connection.   It's a domino effect thing, and unless you get to the deep down heart of the issue then you'll be forever plagued with glitches, and all of your fixes will be temporary.

I'm just giving you tips to help save you headaches (and money) down the road.  Never change an ignition component without first knowing that the components upstream are 100% doing their job first. Doing so is only a temporary fix.

And the cost of all those extra coils (even at a discounted price) is more than the cost of a switchbox.... should you need one.

Your Mercury factory manual might not imply that because it is printed by the Mercury factory....And the Mercury factory loves to sell parts ? That's not a conspiracy theory.... That's just the way they roll.

Hydra Tec is the Regional service center for the Yamahammers.  They work on motors from everywhere.  When I was running one in 2008 they were the best by a landslide.  I know Denny is running one and they do the service and are fantastic.  They are also the top in extended warranty for Yamaha.  If you need an aftermarket warranty for your Yamaha they will most always just cream the dealership you bought it from.

I know enough about outboard motors to put gas in my boat and even that might be an exaggeration of my practical knowledge of such matters.

Nonetheless, I find all of your mechanic related posts fascinating!  Even I thought everything you said made perfect and logical sense.

Now, I still have no idea what that stuff is that you're referring to or what it does for that matter but your explanation of how and why it "breaks" (my kind of technical term) and what to do to fix it was amazing!

I always love it when a subject matter expert, regardless of field, pulls back the curtains and tells it like it really is and doesn't just recite the ripoff, bull crap, manufacturer  smokescreen.

"I know $15000 for a repair sounds like a lot but that's just kind of the way it is ya know.  You get one bad spark plug and you just really don't have much choice but to replace the power head and lower unit cause it's just a matter of time before they're gonna go too........"

Thanks Wrench!

As for the OP, you got a brand new Z521c out of the deal!  I gotta remember to try that approach with Kathy the next time.  "Well, honey, ya know I just can't find anybody to work on that ol' motor anymore so I've really got no choice but to buy a new boat!"

Seriously, sorry for your frustration but congratulations on the new rig!
