Can't say I've ever deep hooked a fish with a 4" tube.

The only tubes I use are 4" BPS magnum tubes with 1/4 or 3/8oz standard shank tube hooks.  I like to get tube hooks with 60 degree eyes.  They seem to have better action than the 90 degree eyes.  With those I usually stupid rig them although you really have to lay into them to get the hook through all that plastic.  I've been trying a different hook that has a thin wire loop guard that goes under the point of the exposed hook and they seem to be working ok so far and it still keeps it pretty snag free.

I've had probs with the hook penetrating the plastic at times. I used to cut a 1" slit at the bottom of the tube to prevent this, but that just leads to more hang ups

It happens a ton in the summer on TR. It's down on my list because of that, but some days they just want it.

That's one of the pluses on the little rig. They will eat it deep, but not as bad as that darn tube. It's also easier to get narrow diagonal cutters in on a Ned head and clip the hook. Those fat 4" tubes don't give you much room.

Once you clip the hook, it's like backing it out of a finger. But with less screaming, lol.

I'll find a pic of the EWG head. It's on my PC from a few years ago, and I'm separated from it at the moment.

That hook gets around it, but it's hard to find. A regular round bend 3/0 or 4/0 shakey head hook will lead to the problem you described.

EWG hook. That one has a screw in it. I started pouring them without the screws, and use the same head for stupid tubes or an  elaztech bait as a shakey head. The EWG lets you skin hook the point, and pins them much more reliably than a round bend.

What size hook is that EWG?  I've tried EWG hooks stupid rigged before and could never get them to rig right. But then again they weren't round head lead. They were they standard teardrop shaped tube jig lead.

Think that's a 4/0. I've put 3/0-5/0 in heads. 3/0 or 4/0 make sense, if you think about Texas rigging a tube.

The tapered heads are going to be too long to make the stupid deal work with an EWG. With a round head you can feed it through the tail, or just snip it, stuff the head in, and glue it closed.

Thanks for the info gentleman. Def gona try a shaky head instead of the tube jig when stupid rigging.
