We have had solar on our 20 slip condo dock for over a year now and it works great. It has an inverter switch that you turn on to get power and it stays on for 4 hours then turns off. We have lights and outlets at every stall and have never had a problem. We even fished a lot during the winter and our batteries charged just fine.

Just like everything else this technology is improving everyday. What wasn't possible yesterday has nothing to do with what might be possible tomorrow. It can work. Now whether or not it's financially feasible to retrofit an old dock depends on who you are. They're selling $100K bass boats for crying out loud.

I have a 2hp pump on the dock it would make short work of and solar arrangement I think

That would be a big pump to run off an inverter and 2 batteries.  I have a 1/4 hp (I think) submersible that runs to my power washer.  I've power washed two boats and entire dock over a couple hour period and run batteries down bout 10% on a sunny day.  They would be back to 100% pretty quick.

This is the one I have.  It's awesome.  Least that's what the literature says.

Johnny World is setting up solar panel displays at this very moment. Endorsed by KVD, of course.

Got an estimate from a solar powered boat dock company yesterday - $15,000 but no guarantee regarding the ability to keep allot of trolling motor batteries charged up.  Also need to add the cost of the required removal of all power poles and related equipment and restoration of COE property, so I'm estimating this in excess of $20,000 - ridiculous!.

C'mon, $20000 is chump change!

Heck, that's not even a decent down payment on a new Ranger!

Just kidding.

I'd love to live on the lake but my choice of lifestyle (boats, tackle and golf clubs) would make it pretty difficult for me to keep up with the "maintenance" expenses.

Everybody has their cross to bear I guess but I try not to complain too awfully much about what certainly qualify as First World problems!

What happens to those expensive, glass Solar panels after one of our frequent hailstorms ?  Wait till your Insurance Companies figure that one out and adjust Premiums accordingly... !

At least they'll hold down the tin dock roofs better in windstorms....

How heavy are those multiple panels + necessary batteries and how much lower will that added weight make the docks sit in the water ?   Will the dock owner(s) then run afoul of the ACOE minimum distance required between water level and the metal on the underlying dock structure ?

Maintenance on these Solar systems ain't cheap...now you'll replace solar batteries as often as you replace trolling motor batteries.....might be time to invest some $$ in the Doe Run Company (formerly St. Joe Lead). ^_^

Some dock owners, BUT NOT ALL, think they own the shore and water around their dock. So maybe this is a wake up call from the government saying they own it. When in reality the American people who pay taxes own it. I think, well maybe, who knows.

Not sure how much things have changed in last 3 years, or what size system your pxing, but $15,000 is more than triple what we have in ours.
