DON'T KNOW IF ANY OF YOU WATCH THE FOOD NETWORK, BUT THERE IS A SHOW CALLED BIZARRE  FOODS IN WHICH THE HOST TRAVELS THE WORLD EATING FOODS/DISHES THAT ARE POPULAR TO THE PLACES HE VISTITS. THE OTHER NIGHT HE TRAVELED FROM MEMPHIS, TN TO NATCHEZ MS BY BOAT DOWN THE MISSISSIPPI. IN ONE OF THE SEGMENTS HE WAS WITH A COMMERICAL FISHERMAN ON THE MISSISSIPPI, THE "FOOD" HE SAMPLED WITH THAT GENTLEMAN WAS THE RIBS FROM A BIGMOUTH BUFFALO.

HAS ANYONE ELSE EVER TRIED THESE? WHEN THEY CUT THEM OUT OF THE FISH THEY LOOKED JUST LIKE PORK RIBS.  THEY JUST COATED THEM IN BATTER AND FRIED THEM. THEY ALSO TOOK THAT FISH JUST HAPPENED TO BE A FEMALE  THAT WAS FULL OF EGGS. THEY COATED THE ROE SACK AND FRIED IT ALSO.

JUST CURIOUS IF ANYONE HAS EATEN THE RIBS FROM ONE OF THOSE FISH????

Several times, while not bad, I nevery saw any that even remotely looked like pork ribs.  Eggs sacks used to be one of my favorite things to eat.  Never ate any from a buffalo, but from bluegill or crappie them little yellow sacks of perfection coated just like a fillet and cover them with a fillet and they get crispy delicious and I am sure unhealthy.  I also like to take walleye eggs and boil them in a small saucepan with a generous amount of crab boil until completely cooked.  Strip off the membranes and mix with a small amount of olive oil and whatever seasoning you like, my favorite is cajun but have tried Greek and few mixtures.  The flavor is good but the texture is tough for some to get past on  these, sort of rubbery little balls.

Well I am setting here at my daughters table in Hermann having lunch and there is some pretty strange things on there. Knowing her when she told me were going to have some of her fermented sweet pickles. In ask  her What toilet are they in. Its was a joke. I tell you though  she can be a very good cook and also come up with some really wild stuff. at least for  me at my age.

I tried to eat a drum once thinking it should be like white bass...it's not.

Also thought about a gar, took it home but I just could not do it. The water in the live well had been changed to clear snot in which the gar was now suspended. Of course I got it out but my arms and fish were covered in a 1/4. Inch of clear snot. I just could not eat it.

I guess if a guy was hungry both would work.

Buffalo is a very Good Native Fish, the Roe is good but pops when Hot. Buffalo ranks right up there with Sucker as far as taste and I'm sure on Mississippi would have better chance catching Buffalo.

Gar has a firm Meat and is hard to Skin but know several that Pickle it. Drum is different not my best to eat when there is better.

Strangest meat I've had was one time to visit a friend. He was eating pieces of Pickled meat. I asked him what it was? Seems he baited up a Large Trap caught English Sparrows, pickled them. But this was back when people weren't so picky.

Buffalo is very good. Its usually on the menu at soul food joints, and at fish stands along the Mississippi.

Had a guy from Warsaw go to a CAG fishing social and served buff ribs..was good..but I am lazy when it comes to cleaning any fish, like any fish on the big side they get nasty...If I was to keep a buff for the table, I'd gut and gill it and put it on ice....you would be amazed how crappie and walleye taste better that way..

but a warning a legal walleye becomes a barley short walleye once its on ice for a bit...an expensive ticket I got once..still mad about that...its was legal when it went in the ice....only violation I ever got..went from 1/2" over to 1/4" under...funny thing is a month later got checked again and the same CO...he had his supervisor with him that day, I told him this time I don't have any 1/4" under fish..his boss looked at him like WTF? and the CO said " I don't write tickets for 1/4" under"..I laughed and said yeah right.......I don't think he is a CO in our area any more! so put them on Ice with caution!

I have had buff ribs that had been smoked and I liked them. I had a bow fishing book once, wish I knew where it went anyway it had recipes in it. One was called lobster imposter. It was drum seasoned and put under a broiler to be cooked. Drizzled of dipped in butter and eaten hot. Very, very good. Sure wish I knew where the ingredients part was. Would be eating them again. That would be the drums punishment for you thinking you had a big walleye from the depths only to see it is a drum. A big one fights good and they will flat slam a SR5 and a SR7 sized shad rap :) ,
