netboy Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 This was a first for me. I waded an area near the Cotter bridge Sunday morning where I have been seeing a big brown trout the last couple of trips. The water was down and very clear. Sure enough he was there but once again wouldn't look at anything I threw. I tried an egg pattern, sculpin imitation, big streamer, marabou jig, midge and then a woolly bugger. He followed the sculpin once and then lost interest. I finally gave up on him and went back to an egg/midge combo and started to catch a few rainbows. I hooked a 12" rainbow on the midge and then a couple smaller rainbows started following the one I had hooked apparently interested in the egg. Then I see the brown swoop up and grab one of the rainbows (probably around 10") and had him sideways in his mouth. I watched him settle back to the bottom and he held that rainbow sideways for about 5 minutes then turned it around and swallowed it. He stayed in the same spot all that time. Guess I need to find a rainbow trout colored jerkbait. Johnsfolly, JestersHK, Phil Lilley and 1 other 4
MoCarp Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 use a testers model paint pin for a few dots, replace the hooks with wide gap KVD red hooks, and slather it with the slime from some keeper bows, get more slime keeping them in a bucket with some saltwater makes them slime up more, just saying (don't release them after... they will die after you collect the body slime) MONKEYS? what monkeys?
Quillback Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 That would be a neat thing to see. Maybe one of those big soft plastic rainbow imitating swimbaits would work? They make some really realistic imitations, pricey however.
netboy Posted January 29, 2018 Author Posted January 29, 2018 Thanks for suggestions guys. Next time I'll try this streamer my friend Mark Crawford gave me a couple years ago. He said it imitates a small rainbow really well. It was interesting that it all happened within 10-15 feet of me and in thigh deep water.
JestersHK Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 Man, Would of been great to catch on a GoPro underwater! MoCarp 1
netboy Posted January 29, 2018 Author Posted January 29, 2018 Yeah, I tried to get some pictures with my cellphone, but too much reflection.
BilletHead Posted January 29, 2018 Posted January 29, 2018 Netboy, A gallop T&A streamer rainbow pattern. Avtually pretty easy to tie up. I did this one a few years back. The pink marabou along the side has faded some. Articulated and has great action, Use a full sinking or sink tip line. netboy Posted January 30, 2018 Author Posted January 30, 2018 Thanks BH, I found this link on details for tying the T&A. I'll give it a try. http://www.flysandguides.com/how-to-tie-kelly-galloups-ta-rainbow BilletHead 1
Flysmallie Posted January 30, 2018 Posted January 30, 2018 The T&A is a great fly. The rainbows will eat it up too. I know what's happening at the vice tonight. BilletHead 1
joeD Posted February 1, 2018 Posted February 1, 2018 If you can see big browns, they can see you. Difficult catching them on low generation. Regardless of what you throw. Wait for generation, get a boat, and throw jerkbaits. But, what do I know? Fishing is fun, especially on the White. Gavin and Johnsfolly 2
