It sure seems like Merc has 70%+ market share as well...I'm guessing if another manufacturer had that we would hear a lot more issues on that brand as well.  The other 30% is split between Yamaha and Evinrude and occasional Suzuki it seems.

It's not a quality problem, really.   They want to be the fastest, and High Performance comes at a cost.

The best top fuel dragsters are only good for about six 1/4 mile runs between rebuilds.    They run fast, but they don't run long.

I don’t go fishing to go fast and no matter how fast you go there is always the next mile per hour faster so why chase it.

not about to get I to a ford vs Chevy vs dodge pissing match. I would assume more mercs on the water and you naturally will hear of more that have issues.

mine has been flawless for me since new in 2010. Not a single issue.

Wrench the reason I ask about the Merc factory reman is simply warranty related. I would definitely be interested in hearing what you could possibly do for me. at the moment it is waiting on insurance adjuster at Troutt and Sons in St James as it is 10 min from my house.

I read on some other forums about guys with off shore boats putting a few thousand hours on their mercs. I read one the other day, i think the guy said he traded in his twin opti 150's with 5700 hours on them.   Is it more the big motors that like to pop? or do us freshwater guys just tend to run on the Rev limiter all the time

Power per cubic inch.

More from less = less life

there are occasional examples that buck the odds, they also cost more per inch. On road, off road, marine, 2, 4 and diesel regardless of manufacturer. It’s better with today’s tighter controls but the ratio still applies.

Really shows up in V6 outboards where multiple tunes are an option at same displacement. Bear in mind we remember hearing of it and never as a percentage of the population.

5k hours on a saltwater motor is a fairy tale.   800 is average.  1500 is possible

I had a rod cap come loose on a Chrysler 55-horse.  It flopped around inside and almost cut the powerhead into two pieces.  I was at wide open throttle to make the heavy old Ouachita plane.  I replaced it with a 75-horse I rebuilt.   I bought the most recent Chrysler bass boat with an identical outboard.  It has a sweet spot around 3800 RPM's does 22 MPH and planes just fine.  I do not feel the need to go any faster.
