We did duck and cover drills for years  decades  and no amount of knees around your ears could keep atomic energy, radiation or fallout from harming you. The active shooter drills will condition the kids to follow instructions like good little lambs, may even create some that grow up "law-abiding".  (similar to the d&c drills, eh?) There is even an outside chance that it may help manage or prevent loss of life in a future situation.

So, I'm lost what is so sad?

I noticed the last time I went into a crowded court room that there's no chance of carrying anything besides a wallet and some car keys into there.  And they go through that shakedown every day.  So it's possible to assure that nobody mows down a covey of current county officials, but not quite as important that nobody mows down the future ones.

You can thank the same generation that eats laundry detergent.

I disagree.  It's the generation before them that didn't tell them right from wrong.

The shooters know right from wrong.  It isn't parent induced ignorance.   Put the blame where it truly belongs.

If they didn't know right from wrong then they'd never pass 3rd grade.

I still disagree. This current generation didn't get a switch or a belt across the rear when they did something wrong when they were young.  They were coddled and handed trophies for joining sports teams and told them they can have anything they want without having to work at it.  It's all entitlement and the have no sense of responsibility or consequences because they weren't raised that way.  All they care about is themselves and burying their faces in their phones.

I'd wager that if you took a look at the ones who have done the shooting, you'd find that they weren't coddled, handed trophies, and never smacked.

The real problem is overpopulation.  There are so many people that some of them lose compassion for others.   A group of 3-4 kids will get along with each other and work problems out.  A group of 50 will divide into smaller groups. And a couple of individuals will never find their group.

The more crowded the world gets, the more problems it has.

Maybe it is because parents cannot give a kid a belt across the rear? I remember getting one and just thinking of getting it was worse then the punishment. It did not even have to be a hard spanking.   Spare the rod spoil the child.    I turned out Ok and BilletHead Jr. did too and he got spanked a few times :) . Neither one of us were abused. Did any of you cut your own switch?  I am not talking a beating either or condoning it for anyone,
