Too dang fancy for Carp.

true, but I am not fishing for average common carp,

I seek bigger wiser quarry, fish that can be over 40# That are hard to fool, and can shell out most tackle meant for mere mortal bass, many a rod has been snatched and lost from that 1st carp run, when I get asked what its like, I describe the run of a monster carp like a tire running down hill, you just hang on and hope your drag can hold it.

the long rods with parabolic actions allow you to land those fish on the small hooks sometimes needed to fool a fish into taking your offering, these specialized rods can also chunk the heavy weights sometimes needed (3-4oz) at distances as far as 200 yards away. far enough from you so the wary-est fish will not suspect your bait. it is a joy to fish with these thin strong carbon blanks, they are not like the pool cue surf casting or catfish rods, you can feel every swish of their powerful tails and that lumbering shake from those basketball sized heads.

I have a place where a large fish swims,we call her El Diablo, 1st time she was caught was 9 years ago when she was 22#. she has been caught just 4 times in 9 years.....the last time she weighed 43# the next time she gets caught she will prob be a new Missouri state record.

how do we know its the same fish? she has a distinctive scale pattern and a notch in her tail fin. if that fish gets arrowed it will be a shame after blessing the 4 anglers  who have been lucky enough to have placed the old girl on a mat.

for some reason the tipping point for carp seems to be 20#. once they get that old and big they don't fall for things as easy as there foolish younger brethren. of all the species of fish I have chased these are the most challenging to fool, and the most powerful, just something about those long sizzling runs that just keep you coming back for more.

The fish that broke the Texas state record in 2006 and won a $250,000 payday had been landed a hand full of times and released each time to get a little bigger....sadly she was arrowed  not long after she broke the record, many people traveled to Austin, Texas to try for that fish, and it was  for those reasons CT passed the strict no fish over 26" in trophy carp waters.

so there is a reason to hide the super secret carp spot
