And while I am at it......................  there are lures that are being used today............................  that the Bass swallow......................... and die from. I have heard all the people that use these lures say how you just need " to stay in contact with the bait" and they won't swallow it. OK, I guess they are much better than the other 98% of the people I talk to that say they kill 20 to 30 % of the Bass they catch on them.

My two cents.

Oh no you didnt!!!!  I got a stern talkin to on here in another thread for mentioning the same scenario. Funny how a few guys spoke up quickly anout never hooking a fish deep on the Ned, but doing a 20 minute search here shows how common it is for MOST guys fishing it, including myself.  I did a google search out of curosity, and even the top pros commented how it hooks fish deep.  That bait is a small fish numbers bait, so i can only amagine how many non-legal fish die daily due to it thruout the country.

The fish doctor is prone to being swallowed as well and you basically just slowly reel it in so you have contact with the bait the entire time. I've only fished it a few times and didn't have any fish swallow it, but I could see where one could easily do it IF they bit and swam towards you. I've fished the NED a lot in the winter and have had very few fish swallow it. With that said, I've had some other guys fishing with me on those days using and NED and they had several fish hooked deep with it. I think a lot of it comes down to being able to detect a bite in decent time.

Always exceptions to the rules MO.  You contribute enough here you can set on any spot as long as you want, even during the bass fishing times.

LOL, if I am setting there for very long I must be catching something, come on in.  Nothing more fun than having someone crowd you and you keep catching fish while they cant.  Even with specific instruction how to do it.  I have had it done to me enough in the same boat that I enjoy giving it back occasionally.

No doubt some fish are hooked deep, and killed due to poor hook removal skills.  I used to use the Ned before I knew it had a name in the creeks but don't ever recall much trouble with swallowing it.  Some days though fish will swallow a crankbaits whole too.  I never worry about folks keeping fish to eat, on a small creek I hate to see it, although I have taken some nice stringers of black perch (green sunfish) out of small waters before. Am I biased toward seeing smallies released, yep, never denied it, just like MOCARP is biased toward seeing big carp released.  And as much as I love goggle eye the waters I most often fish don't have a lot so hey usually get released too, but if I am fish hungry and legal largemouth bites and I have a good supply of cajun seasoning I will eat him too.

Im that perfect angler "no not in catching" as ive never been a fan of the taste of fish. Can count on 2 hands the times ive eaten fish in life. Well maybe 3 hands. So typically fish that i catch are fairly safe from a pan. I do keep a few a year for my wife/kids.

I fish maybe 1trip a year other than bass.  That trip usually leaves me scratching my head, as im neither comfortable nor experienced enough to catch crappie, whites, catfish, etc. as the guy sitting 8' away from me in the same boat.

I grew up eating every legal bass we caught. These days I seldom eat bass and I do tourney fish among other fishing. I have seen some tourneys that had fish floating after the weighin but I have been a part of a lot more tourneys that are to the point of obsession in keeping fish alive and released healthy. If we were losing so many fish after each tourney there would be a lot of dead fish floating around the lake. I am on the lake a lot and don’t see that many floaters. I know some sink but you would see a lot more floating if it was a major problem. My .02 worth.

Btw I can’t stand those bluegill fishermen. All those floats cluttering up the lake. They should outlaw bluegill fishing.

OK,

I am really glad the "Crappie being taken out of the Lake" thing came up. Just recently a friend of mine and I were looking on the internet to find the amount of eggs that Black Crappie and White Crappie spawn. Oddly enough the Black Crappie out spawn the Whites considerably. I am thinking up to 60,000 for the Blacks and only more like 20,000 + for the Whites. So now let's consider something.

If for example they had the same number of anglers fishing Crappie tournaments as we do Bass Tournaments don't you think the Crappie population would be smaller?? I mean if all the guys hauled 14 Crappie around all day and then released them it only stands to reason that it would be hard on them.

Now let's consider something else. How many eggs does a Largemouth Bass spawn? I did not find this one on the internet but I am sure someone can do better than I. I am thinking I have seen it to be a considerably smaller number than the 60,000. So it is back to the numbers/survival/volume of anglers going after them thing. We all know that the good Old Bass is suffering from pressure. I would also like to make one more comment. When the word gets out, I mean REALLY gets out, Stockton will get hit with fishing pressure like it has never seen before. It is coming guys, prepare yourselves.

So let's say that Stockton would have a  thousand anglers on it in the same day that were tournament fishing for Bass. Believe me Table Rock goes through this............ think it would make a difference in the fishing/ population of the Bass ??  If you don't.................... well.......................  my heart goes out to you............ you are headed for counseling at some point in your life.

So, gear your thinking up to modern times. People don't stick their hand in the water to tell the temperature anymore. They don't line the boat up with a certain tree on the bank to find the brushpile. They don't have 5 or 6 lures in their tackle box. Fishing on the bank is almost a thing of the past................................  We have boats, fast boats. We have Fish finders, good ones. We have more tackle in a single boat than many fishing departments had in small stores 40 years ago. We don't keep changing fishing lures on the same rod because we have twenty of them in the boat all rigged  up different. On top of all this..................  we have a LOT OF TOURNAMENTS just like Fishing Wrench said.

So just remember this one thing.............. as the lakes age..................... and the equipment gets better.................. and the number of fishermen gets larger.......................... and the number of tournaments keeps increasing.............................  just remember  that we continued to pound the Quail even when we KNEW they were in trouble...................... PLEASE DON"T REPEAT THE SAME THING FOR THE BASS !!!!!! GET ON TOP OF IT EARLY !!!!!

OK, Wally is done again for awhile.

Just a question. Do you think that we as fisherman catch a majority of bass in a lake the size of Stockton? Or do you think it’s a drop in the bucket of how many fish are really in the lake.

I would definitely argue that.   I think there are probably darn few LM Bass in our impoundments that grow old never-ever experiencing a hook.  I'd say that most get caught at least a couple times before they reach 3 lbs.

Otherwise they'd be MORE likely to get caught as they got older/bigger.

Im all for a 3 year study were MDC donates unlimited number of tags, and every bass caught that is to be released, gets a tag.  If a guy keeps a tagged fish, report that it was caught again, and pan dipped.  Would be an eye opener.
