Iowa has a variety of rough fish found in lakes, rivers and ponds such as bigmouth buffalo, smallmouth buffalo, common carp, grass carp and primitive fish such as short nosed gar. These fish are generally very large (but are all sizes), still make for good eating, and you don’t have to worry about length and possession limits. They are usually visible from the top of the water. Be sure you can identify the fish before you shoot. Game fish (ie. largemouth bass, bluegill) cannot be taken by bow and arrow. The restriction exists because it is not possible to catch and release with bowfishing. Excluding game fish gives desirable fish a better chance at reaching maturity. Rough fish often stir up mud in the water, feed on vegetation, or feed on the same food as game fish, such as zooplankton and other invertebrates. Some rough fish, such as bighead and silver carp, are invasive species that damage the ecosystem. A full list of Iowa rough fish species is available in the 2015 fishing regulations booklet. Bring a Friend Big fish like carp may take more than one shot to bring in successfully, and they tend to travel in groups, especially at spawning time. Bring a friend with you to get a shot you missed, a neighboring fish, or just to help you haul in a big catch. You’ll have more fun and probably more success, which means fewer rough fish in Iowa waters. Carp are particularly easy targets at spawning time, as they tend to move to very shallow water and as much as half of their body may be exposed above the surface. Aim From Anywhere Bowfishing is great for those looking for flexibility in their fishing experience. You can shoot day or night from the shore, the shallows, a dock or a boat depending on your preference. However, there are areas in Iowa that do not allow after-hours fishing, and a few that don’t allow bowfishing at all (check locally for ordinances prohibiting bowfishing and in the 2015 fishing regulations booklet). Be sure to check the specific rules at any location you visit. Have Fun Bowfishing is a great outdoor activity that’s fast and easy to learn. That said, remember to have fun and not just try to get rid of every rough fish in an area. The same overfishing problems can befall any angler who takes too much from one spot: the fish will learn not to be there, and you’ll have to find a new fishing point. Even in the case of rough fish, don’t take more than you can use or dispose of responsibly. This is very important if you want to fish from a boat, because too many large fish can sink your ship faster than you’d think. Rough fish must be disposed properly and not left on the bank. Attend the free Iowa Outdoor Expo, September 26 and 27, to learn how to bowfish and discover other new and exciting ways to enjoy Iowa's outdoors. Bring the whole family to celebrate Iowa Hunting and Fishing Day.

MOPanfisher Posted August 22, 2018 Posted August 22, 2018 You know when I was a kid we had a dog that chased cars, I sat down and tried to explain to that dog what he was doing and how it would go bad for him. Eventually a car won, I think I had a better chance with the dog. BilletHead, Daryk Campbell Sr, JohnP and 2 others 1 4
Flysmallie Posted August 22, 2018 Posted August 22, 2018 Dude you are not a contributor. You are a troll, pest, annoying, ignorant. You are the little neighborhood kid that everyone tried to avoid. You don’t get it. You don’t belong. But aren’t smart enough or a decent enough person to just shut up. I truly feel sorry that this is what brings you joy. You need a new hobby. Maybe take up carp fishing. I hear all the cool kids are doing it.
Gavin Posted August 22, 2018 Posted August 22, 2018 Carp are fun to catch and fun to arrow, but.....The truth always comes after the but....I don't read his drivel often...maybe one in 10. Last weeks fly fishing for carp with Dave & Flip was interesting enough to look at, but not in favor of banning him. He needs a "Carp Only Zone". Give him his own forum and make it subscription only. If he posts anywhere else about carp. Kick him, an kill his forum. Daryk Campbell Sr 1

Gavin Posted August 22, 2018 Posted August 22, 2018 I have no agenda, just think that your melt down is sad and funny.
SpoonDog Posted August 22, 2018 Posted August 22, 2018 7 hours ago, MoCarp said: so lets ask, who does belong? and why does carp angling not belong? You need to disentangle your identity from your hobby- people aren't bothered by carp angling, they're bothered by you. It's why people put gas in your well or killed all the fish in your stock tank, I'd wager. It's why you've been banned from so many forums, it's why you have dozens of people here complaining about your behavior. An individual capable of self-reflection would look at all that mounting evidence and attempt a new approach. You continue to do you. I truly wish you understood the obstacle you present to your own success. People aren't upset at the message, they're upset at the message. I've absolutely spent less time on this forum in the past year, because 90%+ of what you write is garbage and I have no interest. This 5+ page thread on carp fishing is not meaningfully different than the last 5+ page thread on carp fishing, or any 5+ page thread on carp fishing- because it's the same quotes, the same anecdotes, the same "research" the same ham-handed approach to broadening interest in European-style carp angling. You enjoy the sport, I get it. Everyone gets it. Everyone understands your position- but joining 30 forums to be banned by 28 and trolling the last two with garbage undermines your efforts- and that's something you need to come to terms with. You need to come to terms with the fact public lakes are not your personal fiefdom. You don't get to choose how other people legally enjoy their outdoor experience, and you don't get to sick law enforcement on them because you don't approve. Setting out to ruin a lawful angler's outdoor experience doesn't make you a martyr, MOCarp- it makes you an posterior. If your initial post were just stupid, it'd be one thing. But it's encouraging members to harass sportsmen- a crime in Missouri. At that point I think Phil has an obligation, moral if not legal, to remove you from the forum- not because people hate carp fishing, but because you've crossed a line. bfishn and BilletHead 2
MOPanfisher Posted August 22, 2018 Posted August 22, 2018 As much as I let MoCarp occasionally get to me (sometimes I can just laugh and move on), I don't even remotely support banning him. If we as members simply ignore the drivel and not reply, (very tough some days) then he has no audience. I am one of the worest thinking he will magically begin giving friendly, useful advice, but sadly not the case. What I need is not a way to block his posts I need a way to block me from getting sucked in. 😆 Daryk Campbell Sr, BilletHead, JohnP and 1 other 1 3
