Looks like I may have a chance to upgrade trolling motors. Unfortunately the new one is 24 volt.

I run a single group 29 battery now, it's a little over a year old and is in good shape.

Am I asking for trouble by buying a single new battery connecting it to my old one in series?

You are only as good as your weakest link.  If it is only one year old you probably won't have any problems.  If it were 2 or 3 years old I'd say buy new.

You're not really "asking for trouble" but you're not going to get the preferred type of power and longevity of use out of your TM.

Kinda like adding one fresh AA to your wife's vibrator....The attempt will be noted BUT it's going to result in frustration and tension for the whole family.

My advice is to quit being cheap 😉

Well, I hate to spend 600 dollars on the motor and then have to drop another 200+ on batteries. I understand that it's pretty trivial in the world of boats, but my budget is stretched already, it's not just a matter of me being cheap.

I can't imagine that my battery has degraded that much in a year, I don't think I've ever discharged it more than 50%, since my trips are usually pretty short.

It might be a bit premature but I replace my own TM batteries every other year.  It's cheap insurance that you'll never have a precious fishing day ruined, and I've seen a double-truckload of trolling motors with burnt windings and crusty brushes from running on low voltage.

You asked.....but knew beforehand that you were not willing to "start fresh", so go for it.   The cost of fresh brushes, seals, and a new armature is 380.00 plus labor (2.7 hrs.)

I have kids to put through college, so please holler when she "just doesn't have the power she used to have, and sucks the batteries dead in 1/2 the time it used to". 😊
