Every vessel shall at all times proceed at a safe speed so that she can take proper and effective action to avoid collision and be stopped within a distance appropriate to the prevailing circumstances and conditions. Doesn't this make the power boater responsible to avoid the kayak? Only if a woman is driving. 😎 MickinMO, tjm, BilletHead and 1 other 4
tjm Posted April 30, 2019 Posted April 30, 2019 CG calls all vessels "she", and fwiw even a float tube is a vessel to them.

mixermarkb Posted May 2, 2019 Posted May 2, 2019 I did the first LOZ Aquapalooza, way back in like 2008. Putting about a million bucks worth of mobile hydraulic stage trailer and sound gear on a barge in the middle of the lake was pretty hairy. Finding a ramp with the right angle to back the 40' stage trailer on the barge without the trailer landing gear dragging was crazy, ended up at a private gravel ramp in the Gravois and dumping a couple loads of rock between the barge and the bank to be able to make it level enough. Doing a 6 band festival show for about 4500 boats was pretty cool, I wanna say Everclear was the headliner. Things got a little hairy again when all those boats took off after the fireworks. That barge was moving at least as much as I thought it would in that environment, no where near the "nah man, we will anchor it so well you will barely feel it" that the barge company promised. Waves were coming up onto the barge. Lucky I had strapped everything down to the point that we could have down the titanic thing and tipped all the way over and nothing would have moved.. The band gear (drums and guitar amps and the like) wasn't quite as lucky, and some of it darn near made some new fish attractors. 400' of 2/0 three phase 5 wire entertainment feeder cable running along dock walkway to a generator on the shore gave us 200A of 3 phase, or thereabouts. It was in the days before you could remote control audio consoles over wifi, so I ran sound by hopping in a boat and using the TM to go out front and listen, then back to the side of stage to make changes. The front of stage where a pit would usually be, was all folks swimming and lounging on floaties... one of the more interesting gigs I've done in 25 years in the concert biz... liphunter, snagged in outlet 3, tho1mas and 5 others 8

What is the risk of electrocuting a bunch people in a deal like that? mixermarkb 1
Fish24/7 Posted May 2, 2019 Posted May 2, 2019 Were those missing kayakers ever found in Taney county?
bfishn Posted May 2, 2019 Posted May 2, 2019 All this timely talk about kayaks & wakeboats lately made me wonder what would happen if they crossed paths... guess I'm way behind the curve, they already been there, done that; I can't dance like I used to.

All of our gear is fastidiously grounded, and we always drive a copper ground rod 8 to 10 feet into earth to assure ground. That event was as safe as it could be, with the only major variable being the barge company and how skilled they were at anchoring the barge. We actually got pretty adamant with them about adding anchor points, and after they did double their original idea, I felt OK with the event. We were monitoring wind speed and weather radar, and had already made a solid plan to pull the event had any winds gusted to 20mph or more. Having said that, the folks at SeaRay booked Alan Jackson (I think, could have been Brad Paisley) the next year, and did the concert on land, pointed at the lake, and not actually on the water, which as far as I know it's how it has stayed. I'm sure their event insurance was much cheaper with the stage on dry land (!), but we at Production Solutions were pretty proud of pulling off a music festival nearly 400' offshore.
