Blow it up and pay particular attention to anywhere that a road gets close to the river.  Especially if a road/trail or clearing dead ends at the river.

Get a DeLorme Atlas.  Look at it first, looking for any bridge crossing any creek that looks like it might be big enough to hold fish.  Then, instead of Google Maps, use Google Earth.  Use the latest Google Earth imagery to check out the bridge crossings...what you're looking for is a lane leading off the road to the river next to the bridge, or a widened area in the road or an obvious spot to park.  That's far from foolproof, but sometimes the parking spot is obvious.  The reason to use Google Earth, though, is to check out the stream itself.  Use the history feature to find imagery that shows the creek when it's low and clear, and it will show you if there are deeper pools...the latest imagery might have been taken when the creek was higher or murkier and if so it won't give you as good information.

Surprised nobody mentioned street view yet. That can be very helpful.

Do they gather street view images out in the boonies now?  They didn't use to.

Get in your car and drive you wimps! 😄

Oh, No.  Whistledick's 2000 Smallmouth Adventures book cured me of THAT crap.  If only I could have those miles and wear & tear put back on my old red truck she'd still be fresh and not so in need of replacement.

I find the street view is hit or miss most of the time in rural areas. I will use it if that function is there for the spots that I am looking to try to fish. Lately I will identify four or more likely spots using the map features mentioned then will get eyes on the three most promising ones first when I travel to thay area. If none of those don't pan out, I'll will look at the others. Usually at least one will be fishable.

I will also say that I have a few but would love to have every DeLorme state gazetteer atlases as well. I will lose service in a lot of rural areas and having a paper map is invaluable to me. Having the state atlas has helped quite a few times to find a spot or to get me out of one 😌.
