I feel kinda ignorant about "world trade". So since y'all think I'm ignorant about just about everything anyway, I figure this is the best place to ask....

What does China have that we really need?   What would be the ramifications of we completely closed our borders to the Chinese, cut them off entirely, and stopped all communication and trade with them?

In short, why must we even maintain a relationship (good, bad, or otherwise) with them?     Why can't the U.S. just say "piss on you, we're done, have a good life, goodbye"?

Cheap prices!  That is the answer right there. Some quality too but we can do the same.

They own the majority of our politicians, most of our nation's credit and probably most of the shares in  our industrial companies?

I agree with tjm...kinda similar to what happened with Japanese in the 80s...japan was buying everything in sight...we broke it off in them too

i think that’s what is happening now with China...japan didn’t have the resources that China has tho...human (military) or otherwise

Is Japan a totalitarian country where the government owns everything? I can't in any way relate modern Japan with China in my head. But of course I have not studied either in depth. The USA fought Communists around the world  for decades until 1979 and then we sold out to them.

To take it a step further...our leaders used the term war all the time when they initially were talking about it...don’t hear it much anymore

but to add-on to terriermans comment...if they shut down the economy...with it goes the consumerism...the majority of Americans aren’t out buying plastic gadgets of all sorts that were made in China...and fueling their economy...so we’re hitting them in the pocketbook

im not sure what the current trade gap with China...I could look it up but I’m tired...but I bet the gap is at least 5 to 1

really only thing China buys from us...is commodities...ie agricultural products...ie soybeans and grains...prices on that stuff is out of sight...way over what it would be without the China mandate to buy

China doesn’t need all that product...but was basically forced to buy something by us congress...so bought it because it’s a relatively safe investment and they control the market

I’m stopping before I get to wound up✌️

I just meant the way the us used the Japan yen to fuel our markets...stock...real estate...you name it.  JapAn was buying in the 80s

We don't manufacture anything else that they can use. It's a placebo for the few that worry about trade balance.  China is a huge wealthy country with a history much longer than ours, we literally have nothing for them but money and territory, they have been hesitant to claim our territory, I don't think that means they never will. I believe patience is considered a virtue in the far east.

Food has been a primary weapon for control for a long time.  China has some other sources for beans, rice etc, however those sources aren't as relI able as the US, have a bad year in South America or liss off the Russians and it will be along cold hungry winter.  They do also buy the light sweet crude oil that we manufacture.  China has always had one main resource, oeople, and along willingness to use them however they see fit, it it costs them a few million, so what there are plenty more.  What we would have to hope for us that we could make things tough enough on them to cause the population to rise up against their government, but would they and can we last that long?

Oil market is propped up too...that’s why Saudi’s and rooskies are racing to be the lowest bidder

us oil only viable option if price is propped up

but otherwise smell what you’re stepping in...and agree with it

How many times did they rebel in the past? 557 emperors and best part of a century as communists and apparently nothing has changed  in how the central government relates to  the people or to the world in all that time. Revolt rarely brings change, just new players.
