Chumming is legal everywhere in Missouri for any species except in the trout parks.

Would crickets be a problem with kids? Seems like bluegills hit them hard and you have to be on your toes or lose the bait.  Some kids might not pay close attention well enough.

Raised 3 kids fishing like that.  They had no trouble at alll

Make sure you use the long shank light wire cricket hooks, especially with the kiddos.

Found 8 of them the other day! Like Babler said 15-20 feet . Also don’t be afraid to try around docks . We fished from 7-11. Used worms probably could have caught a big mess , but it wasn’t worth it when it’s 95 out and the crazies are running around . They did fry up very nice though

Seems you might have taken my reply as being harsh.  Sorry about that the kids will have a great time playing with the crickets and fishing with them
