Never been to Truman

I’m making the drive up from Springfield and my brother in law is making the drive from KC next week. Planning to meet at the ramp off 13 called Sparrowfoot or Bucksaw. After some googling it appears Truman is known as a great crappie lake. Should we stick with crappie or is there a bass population too. How bad is the under water timber? Looking at it off the bridge it appears we will need to be careful with the boat. Would you suggest to launch at Sparrowfoot or Bucksaw? We would appreciate any insight about the lake that would be helpful to us. Thank you in advance.

Truman is a great crappie lake. Can be some good bass fishing also. And you are correct sir, you better know where you're going or you can damage a prop real quick!! Stay in the channels and idle into coves. If it was me i would put in at Bucksaw. There are some good crappie areas not far from the marina. The best thing about Truman this time of the year is you dont have to deal with a lot of wake boats, skiers, jet skis etc. There are some but nothing like Table Rock or LOZ. Find out how deep the crappie are. Maybe stop at Everhards on 7 hwy as you enter Clinton and check on their board or ask somebody. Stick and move!! Good luck. Looks like you may get a break from the heat!!

From what I have seen it is mostly shallow water there by 13. Not sure how good the fishing is there.

I have only ever been around the Fairfield/Osage Bluff area.

I'd start looking in Timber by the river channels. Cedar trees are always worth a dip, even if they are not that deep. This time of year they can be almost anywhere.

Besides the crappie there are plenty of white bass and hybrids as well.  Just abut anything from a bluegill to a big ole flathead is liable to grab your bait.  If in doubt use caution wherever you are, stuns and trees are plentiful in lots of places.

Crappie is pretty good right now. Fourth of July weekend we trolled main lake points in the 20-25 ft range and were getting two-man limits in about an hour. 11-13-inch fish, too. Normally they get in the deep timber and can be caught on jigs but from what I've been told they just aren't there yet. At least not in droves like normal. When you troll, too, you catch a variety. Walleye, crappie, whites, hybrids, and the elusive drum ha. Stop in the Bucksaw marina and they'll point you in the right direction. I'd go to Pretty Bob or Otter creeks.
