I didn’t have a choice.  I had a brain clot that put me in the hospital, then to a rehab hospital then out patient rehab.  They did a cranial angiogram and found the right vertebral artery is 100% blocked and the left one 70% blocked.  I was told no more tobacco, no more caffeine and no more alcohol unless I wanted to die.  I have always been a red meat eater.  Now it is a couple of times a month.  They said the Mediterranean diet was the best thing I could do, so I am eating that way and feeling pretty good.

Mary is big on supplements and probiotics, and stuffs some down my throat now and then.  We've been regularly taking a couple of things that are supposed to bolster your immune system's fight against viruses since Covid came on.  I have no idea what they are except one is made from some kind of mushrooms (and smells like it).

Mary has been intermittently fasting for over a year now...hasn't lost as much weight as it seems a lot of people do, but has lost a little and still eats a lot closer to what she wants than she did on all her other diets.  I have always somewhat intermittently fasted, since I seldom eat breakfast and don't eat until after noon, and don't eat much after supper, so most days I've always gone 16-18 hours without eating.  But I did fast for a while more religiously with Mary, and quickly lost 16 pounds, which put me back at my fighting weight where I wanted to be.  However, I suspect the biggest factor in that was cutting down my Coke intake to a couple 20 ounce bottles a week, where before I was drinking at least 20 ounces a day.  I think if I would have kept it up I would have kept losing weight, so I went back to not being religious about the fasting and now I'm holding my weight about where I want it.

Other than that, we eat fairly cleanly.  We do eat a lot of red meat, but it's beef raised by our family without all the crap that goes into it, and venison.  And we eat a lot of vegetables and fruits.  But Covid has also been good for my own diet, because I no longer go into quick shops every time I buy gas, and pick up sweet stuff like Twinkies and Little Debbie's snacks.  Out in Montana, my favorite quick shop had stuff like jalapeno corn dogs that I was addicted to, but not this year.  So thanks to Covid I'm eating a lot less junk food.

I saw a TED talk or something like that about probiotics from some big gut doctor.  Total waste of money.  Your gut biome has millions of strains of bugs and probiotics only have a few different strains.  I looked and they all have the same 4-5.  He said the best thing is eat fermented foods since each one will have different strains.

So that opens the door to another subject, fermented foods. Thank goodness I love them, at least the common ones. I bought the EZ fermenter lids for mason jars and have been wanting to try them, but they’ve been sitting in my pantry for a year. Gotta get started on that...will be a good winter project.

I need to do more intermittent fasting, I was doing it for a while and kind of fell off the bandwagon. I definitely noticed I felt better. I guess some foods start the inflammatory response and it’s hard to figure out which ones.

A year ago my my blood sugar and blood pressure started going up.  Even though I was low carb and working out 6 days a week.  Apparently the 6 small meals a day they were preaching never lets your insulin go down.   Bought a blood sugar monitor and BP machine.   I fast 19 hours a day since January 3.  Low carb very little processed food.  Quit drinking altogether.  Both blood sugar and pressure are back down to normal.  Lost 27 pounds.   Once a week I eat what I want.  Last weekend I had cheddar bay biscuits.  Nothing ever tasted so good.  Fish oil and I take magnesium for Charlie horses.  I’m 59 btw.

We are the same age Pete.

I’ve gone 40 hours before.  You have to get adapted as you go longer. So you get fat adapted.  Otherwise you won’t feel well.

I don’t do it to live longer, I do it to live better longer.  I see guys finally get to retirement and they are out of shape and don’t do anything.  I want to be active as long as I can.

That’s pretty much my goal
