@Al Agnew How would we have "taken it seriously"?  Every state has had a mask order for months.  You yourself said lockdowns/quarantines don't work, so what else is there?  It sounds insensitive to say high risk people need to quarantine, but if you look at it pragmatically that is the only solution that gets life back to "normal"

Are you serious?  Our governor refuses to even consider putting on a mandatory statewide mask order.  The county health department supervisor in the county I grew up in, one county away from where I live now, resigned because as soon as she tried to get a county mask order instituted, she got nasty phone calls at all hours of the night, death threats, and people sending her emails threatening her kids.  The county where I live, the health department supervisor says it's not her job to put on a mask order, and the county commissioners say it is, that it's not their job, so nothing has gotten done.  And because there are no mask orders in any of these counties, the Walmarts and other big box stores here can't enforce their own mask mandates, because people scream and threaten any worker that tells them they have to wear a mask.  I have never in my life seen such selfish, willfully ignorant people, people I know, people I thought were good, intelligent people.  It starts at the top and goes down, and the poor peons at the bottom who are trying to get something done get absolutely no support from their higher-ups, and in fact we have politicians doing everything they possibly can to make spreading this easier, not harder.  In the states or counties where mask orders and bans on large gatherings exist, people ignore it and dare the officials to do something about it.

By taking it seriously, I mean everybody being on the same page, and realizing that the only way to deal with this is for everybody to do their part.  And I never said lockdowns and quarantines don't work.  I said that people are ignoring them and in fact doing all they can to battle against them, and THAT'S why they aren't always working.

With all due respect.... your saying “do it how I think and then we’d be on the same page”...I find the view surprisingly selfish and narrow.

your freedom to be you includes my freedom to be free from you. That’s how this republic works.

What is your solution Basfis?  Let our hospitals fill up?

I wear a mask every time I leave the house, Use hygiene, distance and avoid crowds. Work every day with a few hundred folks that do the same...at work

if my example encourages others, that’s great. If it doesn’t, I do respect their rights until they infringe on me and mine.

I believe choices have consequences. The results are on the one making choices. Sometimes the consequences suck and it’s still their choice until they force it on someone else.

Can someone explain to me why people driving down the highway, alone in their cars, are wearing masks?

Is it for the sake of the hitchhiker that they might decide to pick up?

That's fine, and I do the same.   But consider this pandemic is the greatest challenge of our generation.  Not just in terms of deaths, but the economic impact will carry on for a LONG time to come.  This is our WWI and WWII rolled up in to one.

Bill McClellan's article this past weekend was pretty good.  To paraphrase, he said there used to be a time, not that long ago, "when people believed that government had the absolute right to command almost anything.    Like plucking a young, single man off the street and sending him to a faraway place where other people might try to shoot him.

In today's America, it seems unimaginable.  If our government were to say, "Because of the pandemic, you have to wear a mask, but it will be only for a couple of months because vaccines are on the way," many people would refuse.  They would do so proudly, loudly.  They would talk about freedom."

This sounds an awful lot like what you are saying Basfis.  This generation is a bunch of wimps.  Can't make simple sacrifices for the greater good.  I guess its the age we live in.

Maybe they don't want the car to get it.  Saw today that more lions got infected.  Its bad, really bad.
