I've heard about this for years, and we were in the neighborhood over the weekend so we stopped by. Pretty darned impressive piece of machinery. 'Big Brutus', who created some fine strip pits in SE Kansas from 1963 to 1974:

Note lady between trucks for scale.

Fun facts:

Electric drive, producing 7,500 + HP

Boom is 160 feet

Scoop held 90 cubic feet, 150 tons of Kansas

Speed 0.22 MPH

Weight ~ 11 million pounds

Build on site; parts brought in on 150 railcars

...
Then the coal company came with the world's largest shovel
And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land
Well, they dug for their coal till the land was forsaken
Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man.
And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay
Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away

One of my images from my fourth trip to China. Majong players. Yunnan Provence. I shoot a lot of time exposures, first by accident back in the early 70's, now on purpose. Had to stand and watch for a few minutes, so they'd get comfortable with a stranger standing at their table, then gently put the camera and tripod down, with wide angel, and got the one second exposure just right to capture the movement.

                  Welcome to the Forum Michael,

Spent the first 16 .5 years of my life in El Cajon until my parents got smart and moved to South West Missouri.    Nice pic you posted!

That's just down the hill from Barrett Lake. Get to fish it? Just got my PB on numbers there, topwater, just last week. 230 on the Sammy, averaging 2 # each. EPIC. Five others on JB, so 235 bass total, unreal. Fished from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm, beating my PB record of 40 in a half day's work, which was there four years ago.

Here's a pic of it last fall, of course you know about the fires there.

I was just a snot nosed kid back then. Closest fishing was Santee lakes and my folks would drop me off for the day or I relied on older friends with a drivers license. Camped some with parents and fished Henshaw. The fires heck yes. I remember from our yard since EL Cajon means box canyon watching the hill sides on fire dang near every year. We would get falling ash and leaves that had turned to ash drifting down.

Not all the topwater at Barrett were 2’s. here’s a nice one, double hook up with a gentleman in the background on a kayak that I’ve been teaching how to fish.

No doubt one of the greatest fisheries in the nation out there for big bass. But oh the amount of people. Not for this guy anymore. Good fish man!
